The Las Vegas Aces are making WNBA history. Star guard Jackie Young is expected to sign a one-year contract worth $1.19 million, making her the first WNBA player to earn over a million dollars. As reported by ESPN, this deal represents a significant financial leap for the league and establishes a new standard for how much top players are paid.
The reported $1.19 million salary is the highest amount a WNBA player can earn if they don’t qualify for the league’s new $1.4 million maximum contract. This deal ensures the Las Vegas Aces retain the 28-year-old player, preventing her from becoming a free agent during what’s predicted to be a very competitive offseason.
As a huge Aces fan, I’ve watched Jackie Young become absolutely vital to their success. Since being drafted first overall in 2019, she’s really come into her own as one of the best players in the league. Last season, she was incredible, averaging 16.5 points, 5.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.3 steals a game – she was a huge reason we won our third WNBA championship in just four years! Looking at her career so far, it’s packed with awards: four All-Star appearances, two All-WNBA selections, and she was the Most Improved Player in 2022. And it’s not just the WNBA – she’s also won two Olympic gold medals, one in 3×3 and another in the traditional 5-on-5 format, plus a national championship back in college in 2018. She’s just an amazing player!
Now that Chelsea Young is expected to return, the Aces can concentrate on keeping the key players from their championship team. They’ll prioritize re-signing A’ja Wilson, a four-time MVP and two-time Finals MVP who wants to stay in Vegas, and six-time All-Star Chelsea Gray.
With Jackie Young’s nearly $1.2 million contract close to being finalized, a new, more profitable period for WNBA free agency is beginning.
