Larry David returns to TV ‘with a heavy heart’ for Barack Obama-backed HBO sketch comedy

Delightful news indeed! Here’s another way of putting it: It’s splendidly fantastic news that Larry David is coming back to television screens with a fresh six-part comedy series focusing on American history. This production is brought to you by none other than the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions.

David is set to co-write an HBO series with Jeff Schaffer, who previously served as a showrunner, executive producer, and director on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” In this upcoming series, David will appear as one of the stars, with some familiar faces from “Curb” joining him, along with notable guest stars.

Schaffer and David are set to jointly oversee production, with Schaffer primarily handling direction. The Obama duo, Barack and Michelle, along with Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis, will be the executive producers for this limited series under their production company Higher Ground Productions.

On this significant milestone of America’s 250th anniversary, President and Mrs. Obama aim to pay tribute to our country’s distinctive past, in a celebratory manner during this special event.

…But then Larry David called.”

Television

After a span of 24 years, Larry David’s well-known and awkwardly uncomfortable portrayal of societal faux pas will conclude. David and his cast recently gave The Times a peek into the creation of their most unforgettable scenes.

After ‘Curb’ wrapped up, David threw a three-day foam party as a celebration. Unfortunately, an adverse reaction to the foam sent him longing for his tranquil life as a beekeeper, tending to his organic honey production from wildflowers in his meadow. Tragically, one day all of my bees inexplicably disappeared. With a sense of sorrow, I am returning to television, hoping that working on a new project will help me cope with the loss of my cherished hive.

Obama remarked, “I’ve negotiated with some of the toughest global leaders and tackled our most stubborn issues. Nothing quite compares to collaborating with Larry David.

For over two decades, starting in 2000 and ending in 2024, the highly praised and adored “Curb Your Enthusiasm” graced our screens with a grand total of 12 seasons.

Schaffer stated that the roles Larry played didn’t alter historical events significantly. Instead, they were mostly overlooked by history. This, in his opinion, is a positive aspect.

David and Schaffer have collaborated on projects like “Seinfeld” and the TV film “Clear History,” where David took the leading role. Besides this, Schaffer is recognized for his roles as co-creator of “The League” and “Dave” at FX. Additionally, David has experience in sketch TV comedy, having been a writer and performer on ABC’s late-night series from the early ’80s titled “Fridays.
