DC fans will have to wait longer for the next chapter in the DC Universe. HBO and DC Studios have officially pushed back the premiere of “Lanterns,” the second live-action series in the DCU. The show follows Green Lanterns John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. There’s been a lot of speculation about when it will air, with some reports pointing to a spring 2026 release, but it now seems likely the premiere will be after the “Supergirl” series.
During a presentation in New York City, HBO CEO Casey Bloys announced that the series Lanterns is currently planned to premiere around the end of summer 2026, as reported by The Wrap. This news came with renewals for several other HBO shows, including Task, I Love LA, The Chair Company, and House of the Dragon. While a specific premiere date for Lanterns wasn’t revealed, that information will be shared later. The show will feature Pierre and Chandler, along with Kelly Macdonald, Garrett Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, and Nathan Fillion, who is returning as Guy Gardner from Superman.
When Can Fans Expect To See ‘Lanterns?’

Warner Bros. Pictures
James Gunn had suggested that the Lanterns series would come out before the Supergirl movie, which is scheduled for June 26, 2026. This made many people think Lanterns would be released on HBO in the spring to build anticipation for Supergirl. The plan was to space out the releases with Lanterns in the spring, Supergirl in the summer, and Clayface in the fall, targeting a September 11, 2026, release for that film.
The premiere of Lanterns is currently planned for late summer 2026, after Supergirl has already launched. Since summer officially ends on September 22nd, 2026, Lanterns could premiere as late as September 20th. It’s also possible the show will debut in mid-August, following the pattern of Peacemaker Season 2, which premiered on August 21, 2025. If Lanterns does premiere in August, HBO might start releasing future live-action DC series around that time. The release of Lanterns may also coincide with the release of Clayface.
The postponement of the Lanterns series is a letdown, especially since it felt like a natural continuation of the stories told in Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. However, the new late-summer release date means DCU might have a significant presence at San Diego Comic-Con with both Lanterns and Clayface. Interestingly, DC Studios skipped Comic-Con altogether for Superman and Supergirl, although Peacemaker Season 2 was featured in Hall H in 2025. Now, the focus is on Supergirl, and its marketing is expected to begin with a trailer in December, mirroring the strategy used for Superman in 2024.
