According to Landman showrunner Christian Wallace, Sam Elliott’s upcoming role in the series will feature “a lot of really beautiful moments.” Elliott will join season 2 as T.L., the father of Tommy Norris, and his character will be significant to the season’s storyline, though the exact amount of screen time he’ll have is still unknown.
Wallace, in an interview with ScreenRant about season 2 of Landman, discussed how actor Elliott brings a unique dynamic to the show. He explained that viewers will see a new side of Tommy now that his father has appeared, exploring the often humorous and touching relationships between generations.
ScreenRant asked about the exciting addition of Sam Elliott to the show, playing Billy Bob’s father. They wanted to know what it meant for creator Taylor Sheridan (Landman) to have someone with Elliott’s talent join the cast, and how his presence would affect the power struggles within the Norris family.
Having Sam Elliott on the show was a huge win – it felt surreal! He brings so much to the set, both as an actor and as a person. His character lets us explore three generations of the Norris family, and we get a new perspective on Tommy, learning about his past and the relationships that made him who he is. This creates some funny moments, but also really touching family scenes, which are ultimately what the show is built on.
This will be Sam Elliott’s second project with creator Taylor Sheridan. He previously starred in 1883, a prequel to Yellowstone, playing Shea Brennan, a former army captain. In the new series, Landman, Elliott will play a supporting character, but his story is expected to be deeply emotional.
Wallace’s connection with Tommy is notable, but the new character is expected to share strong bonds with several others in Landman. This includes Cooper Norris, his grandson, who is working to establish his own oil business to provide for Ariana and their child. We’ll also see him interacting with his granddaughter, Ainsley, and his daughter-in-law, Angela.
Currently, it’s unclear exactly how T.L. will fit into the show’s overall narrative. The first season of Landman concluded with Monty’s death, leaving Tommy and Cami to manage M-Tex Oil. Season two will focus on their struggle with financial corruption that was happening secretly, and their unique methods are making them enemies.
Tommy’s father’s storyline seems like it will bring a different kind of emotional weight to the show, though we don’t yet know exactly how. Given the actor’s ability to handle both funny and heartfelt moments, his scenes will probably be particularly impactful and help make season 2 stand out.
Now that Landman is almost back, we’ll soon learn more about Elliott’s character, T.L. The trailers suggest he’ll be closely interacting with the Norris family, though it’s unclear if he’ll be part of other plots. Right now, his relationship with Tommy seems to be the central focus of his story.
