‘Landman’ Ditches Texas for Oklahoma: Why Season 2 Is Filming in a New State
The popular Taylor Sheridan series “Landman” is in the midst of producing its second season. When it debuted on Paramount+ in 2024, it broke records as the most-watched original series ever on the platform, garnering attention from 14.9 million households worldwide within its first four weeks. Many of Sheridan’s shows continue to be cornerstone titles for Paramount’s streaming library, making a renewal for “Landman” a logical decision. However, things are set to shift in the production team.
It’s been announced that the shooting of “Landman” Season 2 will take place at a fresh location – Durant, Oklahoma. Previously, most of the series’ production for this season was completed in Texas, including Fort Worth and Jacksboro. However, the team is now moving to Durant, which is approximately 120 miles from Fort Worth. Although this change may not be significant, it could bring some intriguing twists to Season 2 since the setting has shifted to an entirely new state. The upcoming scenes in Oklahoma will showcase casinos, and auditions are currently being held for background extras to play casino patrons in the series.
Billy Bob Thornton has hinted at the scripts and plot for the second season of “Landman,” expressing his enthusiasm by stating, “I loved it. Taylor is very familiar with this show; he has a clear vision for it, making it an enjoyable read that didn’t leave me questioning anything.” In addition to Thornton, Sam Elliot will join the cast as a series regular for season 2. When asked about Elliot’s participation, Thornton shared his excitement with The Hollywood Reporter, saying “Working with Sam has been fantastic. I’ve known him since the ’80s, so we go way back.”
‘Landman’ Season 2 Will Feature a Change in Backdrops & Directors
It’s intriguing to speculate about potential shifts in style or approach for the upcoming season of “Landman,” given that Taylor Sheridan, who played a significant role in the first season by directing the first two episodes and writing the entire series, has moved on due to his busy schedule with other projects. In his absence, Stephen Kay will take over as director for the entirety of Season 2, a transition that may not be unexpected considering Kay’s substantial contribution to the first season where he directed several episodes.
Thornton has previously expressed that he enjoys working on “Landman” as long as his services are needed, and Sheridan’s tale is captivating. Many of the actor’s remarks about the show highlight Sheridan’s writing abilities, with Thornton showing enthusiasm for the series’ future and the ongoing development of the characters’ relationships. The rapid production schedule for the series is equally thrilling, indicating its widespread appeal.
As filming continues to go well, wrapping up in August, it appears the series is on track for its previously confirmed release date of November 2025. Given that the last episode of season one premiered in January 2025, this is quite an achievement. The first season garnered a 78% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 64% audience score. Here’s hoping the second season preserves the show’s quality (and perhaps even enhances it) with its new locations and plotlines, despite Sheridan not being involved in directing this time around.
