In a tight-knit town obsessed with Gaelic football, Cian lives a carefree life of fun and celebration. As the captain of the local team, he’s also a local hero, enjoying the attention and praise that come with the role.
But that all comes crashing down when he sustains a severe injury on a night out.
Man, my football career is on the line, and I’m seriously struggling. I’m trying to figure out what to do with my life now, but honestly, I’m worried I’m just going to keep making things worse. Will I pull it together, or just keep heading down a bad path?
Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney make their feature film debut with Lakelands, which stars Éanna Hardwicke (known from A Very Royal Scandal and Fate: The Winx Saga) and Danielle Galligan (of Shadow and Bone and House of Guinness).

Honestly, I was blown away by how well Lakelands captured the vibe of small-town Ireland. Film Ireland said the same thing, and I totally agree! The acting was incredible across the board, especially from the leads – Hardwicke, Galligan, and Lorcan Cranitch who played Cian’s dad, Diarmuid. Plus, the director really knew what they were doing – it all just came together perfectly.
Entertainment.ie praised the film as a fresh look at themes of masculinity, sports, and family, noting its remarkable authenticity. They highlighted that many scenes felt so real they couldn’t have been fabricated.
In a review for The Guardian, Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney’s film starts with a light and easy feel as it explores its characters. However, the review notes the film often drifts into a sad and accepting mood, particularly when focusing on older, more weathered drinkers, implying a sense of inevitability and resignation.
I just read a review of Lakelands and it sounds amazing! Movie Marker called it a really thoughtful, well-made drama that digs into what it means to be a man, and really highlights how important it is to give people another chance. I’m definitely adding it to my watchlist!
