WARNING: Major spoilers for Lady in the Lake episode 3 are below.

In this week’s installment, we delve into Cleo’s past through some well-placed flashbacks set in 1948. These snippets provide insights into her upbringing and the dynamics of her family. Her parents’ financial struggles come to light when her father loses all his savings to an unscrupulous employer. In a heartwarming moment, Cleo sacrifices her own savings to help him out. Despite their hardships, their bond is evident as they playfully pretend to perform on their bathroom sink, creating a sweet scene of normalcy amidst adversity.

Cleo can’t shake what happened to her

Currently, Cleo is grappling with the events of last week’s episode in her mind. She never intended to be involved in an attempted murder, let alone against Myrtle Summer. It’s all very confusing for her, and she’s finding it hard to cope. She reaches out to Reggie for support, but even at work, she can’t help replaying the incident in her mind.

Maddie persists in starting anew, first having her ears pierced at the retail store, then visiting Bob Bauer, the journalist she previously provided information to at the newspaper. Recall, this is the gentleman she had interacted with before. Arriving at his office, she shares her intention of contributing to their reporting on Tessie’s murder. However, despite Maddie’s journalism background, Bob declines to recruit her. In response, she decides to uncover a story herself and pens a letter to Stephen Zawadzkie, who is currently hospitalized in a psychiatric facility. The question remains: What does Maddie hope to achieve here? And does it strike anyone else as an increasingly desperate move on her part?

Cleo’s son Lionel continues to battle sickle cell anemia without improvement. One day, Cleo observes that Lionel’s eyes have turned yellow, causing her great concern. She seeks guidance from her mother. Doctors report there are no more treatment options, so Cleo’s mom invites a reverend for support. However, this brings no comfort, leaving Cleo despaired. Feeling overwhelmed, Cleo breaks work rules and heads to the club. There she drinks excessively and nearly creates a disturbance. Slappy eventually escorts her home. Meanwhile, Maddie continues her affair with Officer Platt, engaging in another sexual encounter.

At home, Cleo is intoxicated and attempts to dance with Slappy, but he’s not in the mood for it. They have a disagreement, but once Slappy hears Cleo weeping, he consoles her. He inquires about her distress, and she speaks of their son. She realizes there’s nothing she can do to alleviate his struggles, making this realization a painful pill to swallow.

Maddie comes clean to her son

Mornings after her late-night rendezvous with Officer Platt find Maddie in a frenzy. In a state of panic, she rushes to clean up her apartment before dashing out the door. Arriving late at Seth’s college fair, she is met with his anger. Afterward, she takes him to her new place, and he reluctantly follows, unimpressed by her living quarters. His displeasure stems from her departure, but Maddie assures him it was his father she left, not him. In the heat of an argument, Maddie makes a regrettable admission, revealing that Milton may not be Seth’s true father. Caught off guard, Seth reveals his discovery of her private journals.

Officer Platt apprehended the suspect attempting to harm Myrtle on the street. The man described a woman at the scene wearing a striking blue coat, which piqued Platt’s interest, as he recognized it as Cleo’s usual attire. He visited the department store to confront Cleo about her involvement and informed her of his knowledge of her presence there. Initially denying it, Cleo eventually disclosed details about the car, make, and license plate number. Platt assured her that she could confess to the police to gain leniency, but Cleo was hesitant, wondering what would transpire when her time ran out.

Maddie gets a response from Stephen in the form of a letter. Excited about this development, she returns to Bauer and shares her newfound story. Initially reluctant, Bauer eventually consents to publish it in the newspaper. With the advance she receives, Maddie is able to cover her rent payments. Elated by this turn of events, she rejoices with Judith.

Cleo visits Dora and Reggie, accusing him of making her bring the gun. He explains he meant to shield himself, implying Shell was unaware of the situation. Cleo reveals her suspicion of Shell manipulating the numbers and asks for his help in winning money. She guarantees him a 10% share and intends to depart afterwards. However, Reggie refuses.

Maddie continues her own investigation

Bauer accompanies Maddie to meet the doctor who conducted the autopsy on Tessie. The doctor reveals that aside from gravel, there were skin cells discovered under Tessie’s nails. This indicates that she may have struggled during her attack. While the doctor is unsure if these cells belonged to Stephen, he mentions that Stephen didn’t have any visible scratch marks. This revelation sparks Maddie’s suspicion that another person could have been involved in Tessie’s murder.

In this week’s installment, Maddie receives a phone call from the mental health facility requesting her presence at Stephen’s bedside. She goes there, makes themselves known to him, and the scene concludes with the screen darkening.
