Lady Gaga Speaks Out on Joker Sequel’s Shockingly Bad Reviews and Box Office Bomb

Lady Gaga openly discusses her feelings regarding the general disapproval towards her movie “Joker: Folie à Deux.

In a heartfelt chat for Elle’s latest issue, I – a die-hard fan – shared my thoughts on how the movie we both adore didn’t quite hit the mark with audiences.

Lady Gaga, known for her passionate response to Donald Trump’s reelection, appeared in the follow-up to the Joker alongside Joaquin Phoenix. However, the enchantment that was present in the original movie seemed absent in this sequel, as suggested by many film critics and viewers alike.

2019’s initial release surpassed the billion-dollar mark at the box office, even with mixed critical reception. However, its sequel fell significantly short, earning only $207.5 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo. To add to that, it received a disheartening 28% “rotten” rating from the highly regarded critics polled by Rotten Tomatoes.

However, the chameleon-like actress gave an unexpectedly calm reaction to the broad disapproval of her movie.

‘People just sometimes don’t like some things,’ she said evenhandedly. ‘It’s that simple.’

A portion of the unfavorable reception towards Joker: Folie à Deux might be attributed to its unique positioning as a gritty, dark film that borders on superhero genre – and is also a musical.

While the hit musical Wicked, an Oscar nominee, demonstrates that people are still eager to attend movie theaters for musical films, the Joker sequel, however, lacked a massive fan base excited to listen to its songs, which were a mix of classic standards dating back to the 1930s.

The lack of clarity about the presence of musical numbers in the movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” during its marketing might have caused some viewers disappointment after they had already purchased their tickets, as they only discovered this aspect later on. It appears the advertising strategy deliberately avoided mentioning it.

Previously, Gaga discussed the difficulty of singing for the movie during an interview with Empire Magazine.

‘It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before…’ she said.

As a die-hard fan and renowned global vocalist, taking on the role of an amateur singer was one challenging aspect for me in this project.

She mentioned that she has numerous notes from Lee, which is quite abundant. Being a professionally trained singer, she clarified that even her breathing pattern changed when she sang like Lee did.

In my performance on stage, I employ a precise method of breathing to ensure I hit the right notes and maintain the proper rhythm for the required duration. However, this technique is something Lee would be unfamiliar with. It’s almost like stripping away the technical aspects, detaching my artistry from it all, and fully immersing myself in who she truly is.

In her conversation with Elle, Gaga emphasized the significance of venturing into uncharted territories while working on fresh endeavors.

She went on to say, “To be an artist, one must accept that not everyone will always appreciate your work. Yet, it’s important to persevere, even when a piece doesn’t resonate as deeply as planned.

Lady Gaga, originally known as Stefani Germanotta, expressed her main worry wasn’t about putting out an unappreciated album or film, but rather about her confidence waning before the release.

When fear of failure takes hold in your life, it can become difficult to regain control over it. This is a contributing factor to the chaos, she noted.

Lady Gaga intentionally employed the word “mayhem” in a strategic manner, given that her eighth studio album, aptly named “Mayhem,” is scheduled for release on March 7th.

The album was aptly characterized as a vibrant fusion of various influences and passions, encompassing ’90s alternative, electric grunge tones reminiscent of Prince and Bowie, the spirit and guitar style of rock, funky basslines, French electronic dance rhythms, and analog synthesizers.

The hitmaker went on to describe the album in terms of kaleidoscopic colors.

As I compose, ideas form in my mind and are eventually recorded, transforming into a complete work of art with its own unique hue,” she explained. “Each song is distinctively colored. Many songs from this album have a deep maroon or brown tone. Bad Romance, for instance, had a reddish tinge to it.

Mayhem follows the release of Harlequin in September of last year.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: In my opinion, Gaga’s latest release can be seen as a retro-pop companion album to Joker: Folie à Deux. It’s heavily influenced by the film’s music, and includes tracks from the sequel that are sung solo. This style aligns with her earlier jazz endeavors, such as her collaborative albums with the late Tony Bennett.
