Lady Deadpool's actress shares the surprising reason she was perfect for the role!

As a huge fan of Marvel movies and comic books, I was absolutely blown away by the cameo of Lady Deadpool in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The way Blake Lively brought the character to life on screen was nothing short of brilliant. But what made this casting even more special was the connection between Lively and the character’s creator, Rob Liefeld.

In the popular film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Lady Deadpool had a memorable appearance. Now, the actress portraying her and the character’s creator are excitedly discussing how the casting was a great fit for the role!

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine’s team-up was a massive success in its opening weekend, raking in an impressive $205 million. This isn’t surprising given the return of Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, a.k.a. the unstoppable, wise-cracking Merc With a Mouth. In this installment, he sets out to protect his world from impending doom. To accomplish this mission, he teams up with an alternate version of Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, for a thrilling adventure.

In this film, you’ll find appearances by various Marvel characters, some of whom were previously owned by 20th Century Fox, such as Blade (portrayed by Wesley Snipes) and Elektra (Jennifer Garner). The finale is particularly noteworthy as Deadpool and Wolverine clash with the Deadpool Corps, an eclectic group of alternate-reality Deadpools. This motley crew encompasses a diverse range of beings, from a zombie and a dog to a child, a baby and more.

Among them, the largest role is held by Lady Deadpool, or Wanda Wilson, who debuted in the 2010 “Deadpool Corps” event. The part is played by Blake Lively, a previous star of “Gossip Girl,” and wife of Ryan Reynolds. Initially, it seemed her casting was merely for that connection. However, it was revealed that Lively was the most suitable actor for the job.

How Blake Lively inspired Lady Deadpool

I discovered Deadpool for the first time in New Mutants Vol 1 #98 back in 1990, drawn by artist Rob Liefeld. However, the Deadpool I came to know and love wasn’t quite the same character yet. He wore the same iconic suit and had his signature wit, but his renowned healing factor was nowhere to be found. It would take a few more years before he started breaking the fourth wall with his hilarious comments.

Back in 2009, Marvel welcomed me back into their world for the exciting “Deadpool Corps” event. During this time, I created Lady Deadpool with a unique twist – I based her on Blake Lively, who I was deeply fond of from “Gossip Girl.” It never crossed my mind that she’d one day embody the role, but comic book artists often draw inspiration from real-life actors. Who would have thought it would come true?

Back in 2009, Marvel called me and asked me to introduce Lady Deadpool. My wife and I never missed Gossip Girl, Team Serena all the way, so I gave her the blonde hair and modeled her after Blake Lively. When [Marvel Studios chief] Kevin Feige informed me that they were exploring the Deadpool Corps I got my hopes up. If you’ve seen a screening of Deadpool & Wolverine and you see me fighting back tears, they are tears of joy…. My daughter could not be more excited to see the true Killer Queen finally take her role in the pantheon. Blessings to you, Blake.

I couldn’t believe it when I read that I had no clue about Deadpool back in 2011 during the filming of “Green Lantern” alongside Ryan Reynolds. At the time, Reynolds was already pushing for a Deadpool movie after the character’s disappointing appearance in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” As oblivious as I was about the whole thing, I ended up doing a Lady Deadpool cameo, only discovering later that Liefeld created the character based on me. What a wild ride!

In 2010 I was on Gossip Girl and about to film my first superhero movie, The Green Lantern, with my kind Canadian costar Ryan Reynolds. He told … all of us about the Deadpool movie [idea] for the first time [and how] it was a ‘meta’ superhero. [H]ow it would come together for an audience was murky, for everyone but him. It wasn’t a real dream. The movie was never gonna happen. Just before all this in 2010, Rob Liefeld drew an unmasked Lady Deadpool for the first time, [The Deadpool film franchise] wasn’t real. And Rob had no idea I was working with Ryan Reynolds. 12 years later I read Rob’s [original] post. A year after that, [Deadpool & Wolverine] was filmed. And today it’s in theaters. The universe has such a magical sense of humor sometimes.

If the film performs well at the box office, it’s likely that more movies will follow suit, and a Deadpool Corps spin-off is a strong possibility. This means that Lively could reprise her role as Lady Deadpool, but with even greater attention and acclaim. It’s hard to believe that Liefeld, the creator of the Lady Deadpool model, could have ever imagined this character would make it to the big screen.

Deadpool & Wolverine now in theaters.
