Lachlan Turczan Illuminates Milan Design Week with Curtains of Light

American artist Lachlan Turczan is showcasing six interactive halo sculptures at Milan Design Week 2025 as part of Google’s “Making the Invisible Visible” exhibition. Renowned for his investigations into light and water, Turczan breaks down the concept of form, creating artworks that redefine the immaterial through a shimmering material quality.

Located in Garage 21, the collection titled Lucida (I-VI) casts an ethereal glow with soft shades of white, blue, and purple, illuminating the shadows. As individuals move through this radiant barrier, their presence gently alters its form, resembling billowing curtains in a breeze or peaceful ripples across tranquil waters.

Turczan’s team sculpts transient architectures by employing a mix of lidar, infrared, and regular vision cameras. They adjust the wavelengths and direct the beams, thereby shaping surroundings that are both captivatingly real and eerily alien-like.

Amidst the whirlwind of recent happenings, Lucida serves as a tranquil haven for me. Reminiscent of his ongoing Veils series, which this installation is inspired by, it “paints a picture of a future, not bounded by physical matter, but by energy and consciousness,” Turczan explained. “In here, light doesn’t function to illuminate; instead, it shapes the very structure of our experiences.

The installation is now on view in Milan through April 13.
