As a die-hard Call of Duty League (CDL) fan who has been following the league since its inception, I must say that this offseason has been nothing short of electrifying! The LA Thieves’ roster reveal has truly shaken up the CDL landscape and left me utterly thrilled.
The LA Thieves have formed a squad of superstars that alters the landscape of the CDL.
Following several weeks of anticipation and refutals from team owner Matt “Nadeshot” Haag, the LA Thieves (LAT) have officially revealed their full squad for the 2025 Call of Duty League (CDL) season. Initially, there were whispers about the roster, but Nadeshot dismissed these rumors during his Twitch broadcasts, causing some to question whether this lineup would materialize.
Dan “Ghosty” Rothe is the sole player from LAT who’s still around since the 2024 season. To beef up their team for the upcoming Black Ops 6 season, the organization owned by 100 Thieves has recruited three standout players, one of whom was a previous MVP award recipient, to join Ghosty on the roster.
LA Thieves go all in on the 2025 CDL season
Ghosty is now accompanied by Thomas “Scrappy” Ernst, Dylan “Envoy” Hannon, and Paco “HyDra” Rusiewiez on the team previously known as LAT. Notably, Envoy is making a return, having left for Toronto Ultra during the last off-season following a successful stint that saw him win multiple titles and a World Championship. Interestingly, the entire roster that clinched the championship for LAT last season parted ways due to financial constraints.
It seems that budgetary problems have been addressed since LAT had to pay a large amount for player acquisitions. As reported by Nadeshot, he sacrificed a portion of his own earnings as the founder of 100 Thieves to ensure the team reached its goal. According to Nadeshot, the organization was running short on funds and the money from his salary made the difference.
It’s quite possible that acquisition costs were significantly high for Scrappy and HyDra, as they are often regarded among the best five players in the entire CDL. This year, Scrappy teamed up with Envoy on Toronto, and he’s been a frequent contender for MVP awards ever since joining the league in 2022. HyDra previously won the MVP and world championship titles while playing for the New York Subliners, now known as Cloud9 New York.
The three fresh faces added to LAT have demonstrated their ability to excel at the peak of the game. Among them, only Ghosty, our returning player, has yet to claim victory in an event throughout his career. Yet, Ghosty significantly improved as a top-five CDL assault rifle player during the 2024 season, despite LAT’s underwhelming performance. This growth reached its pinnacle with LAT finishing second at the Esports World Cup (EWC), where Ghosty consistently shone against formidable opponents.
The future will reveal how well this latest team lineup will work together. Previous experiences have shown us that raw talent doesn’t always guarantee success in the CDL. However, there’s no denying that OpTic Texas, Atlanta FaZe, and now LAT seem to be the dominant forces within the league at present.
