L.A. Times names Amy Nicholson as film critic

After a thorough multi-month selection process, Amy Nicholson – a seasoned L.A.-based film critic, journalist, and podcast host – will take on the role of the newspaper’s film critic.

Niccoloson is now part of a group that’s claimed three Pulitzer Prizes for critique over the last decade; among them is Justin Chang, who secured this year’s prize for his work at The Times in 2023 – a position he previously held before her.

Previously holding esteemed positions at various organizations such as the Association of Alternative Newsmedia, SoCal Journalism Awards, and National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards, Nicholson has garnered recognition for her work. From 2013 onwards, she served as the chief film critic at LA Weekly, followed by a stint at MTV News starting in 2016. Her byline can be found in prestigious publications like the New York Times, Variety, Washington Post, Guardian, and Rolling Stone. She is a valued member of both the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics, and has served on the juries for renowned film festivals such as Sundance, SXSW, and has been part of FIPRESCI juries for the Moscow International Film Festival and Cairo International Film Festival, among others.

Together with comedian Paul Scheer, Nicholson co-hosts the podcast “Unspooled,” an attempt to compile a list of the 100 greatest movies ever made. She’s a devoted fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and recently won the top prize at this year’s L.A. County Fair for her homemade sugar cookies.

She starts in her role Monday.
