Kym Marsh’s Terrifying Phone Mugging Horror

Kym Marsh recently remembered the scary incident when someone snatched her phone right out of her hand on a busy London street, just moments after she had taken it out of her bag.

On BBC’s Morning Live on Monday, the presenter (aged 48) provided some information about a recent theft, expressing that she is now experiencing a sense of vulnerability and shock due to the incident.

During the broadcast, Kym shared that a muggings happened on Buckingham Palace Road in London about two weeks back, specifically at 9:30 in the evening.

To her fellow host Gethin Jones, she remarked, “It can be quite startling when it occurs – you’re strolling along a street, and all at once, something is snatched from your grasp.

‘And that was about a fortnight ago that was taken from me. But thankfully I was okay.’

Later on, Kym provided additional details about the theft in a dedicated film for Morning Live. She explained that almost instantly, as soon as she took her phone out of her pocket, someone snatched it right out of her hand.

She said: ‘I felt really vulnerable, I was really shaken. 

‘I immediately wanted to get help but, of course, it’s not so easy when you don’t have your phone.’

Kym also shared that apart from the stolen items, what truly saddened her was the loss of text messages from her father, who had passed away, on her phone.

She mentioned, “Now, I’ve misplaced messages from my father and irreplaceable moments. It’s the emotional aspect that really hurts.

Kym’s father David tragically passed away in January 2024 after a battle with prostate cancer.

Starting from October 2020, incidents of mobile phone theft in the capital have been on an upward trend. As per data compiled by the Metropolitan Police, a staggering number of 66,528 mobile phones were reported stolen in London between October 2023 and September 2024.

Lately, I’ve noticed that innovative strategies implemented by our local law enforcement are yielding positive results. These strategies include meticulously reviewing CCTV footage, heightening the alertness of officers, and utilizing traffic units and surge teams to curb incidents. This proactive approach has led to a significant drop in phone thefts, making our community safer.

In November 2024, there was a 27% drop, but things looked even better the next month, as a reduction of 43% was attained.

Although they have experienced significant achievements, Kaya Comer-Schwartz, the Deputy Mayor of London for Policing and Crime, emphasized that there are still ‘tasks ahead.’

In light of the increasing global trend of criminal activity involving expensive smartphones, the Mayor and I are in agreement that businesses need to take stronger and swifter actions to complicate the process of reselling, recycling, or reusing stolen phones unlawfully.

We’ll persist in collaborating with prominent mobile phone manufacturers, the Home Secretary, and top officials from the Metropolitan Police to devise creative approaches aimed at eliminating mobile phone-related crimes.

The achievement in reducing phone thefts has been realized since the Metropolitan Police exited special measures recently, having made substantial advancements across multiple aspects of their service to London over the past month.

This encompasses acting faster during emergencies and enhancing community-oriented policing to address neighborhood issues effectively, such as dealing with burglaries and robberies that are of concern to the community.

If you’ve misplaced or had your phone taken from you, the Met recommends utilizing the national mobile phone database to register your device. This way, if the phone is found and reported to the Police National Mobile Property Register, there’s a chance it can be returned to you.

Previously this year, Kym parted ways with her younger partner, Samuel Thomas (aged 29), following a fast-paced six-month relationship.
