Kyle Sandilands breaks his silence on 'rival' John Laws' retirement after the radio icon hung up on the KIIS star: 'He's fresh out of ideas'

As an ardent follower of the Australian radio scene, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as John Laws, the legendary broadcaster, prepares to hang up his headphones. Over the years, I’ve witnessed countless memorable moments between him and his on-air rivals, particularly Kyle Sandilands.

Kyle Sandilands playfully poked fun at John Laws following the latter’s announcement of his retirement this week.

Laws, 89, confirmed on 2SM on Tuesday morning that he will hang up his headphones in November.

As a frequent sparring partner on-air, I found myself reflecting upon Laws’ retirement address, and it struck me as if he had run out of fresh thoughts or concepts.

Kyle mimicked Laws’ unique tone as he quoted, “Laws has been on the radio for 71 years, and he expressed, ‘I’m weary, I’m weary.’

‘He sounds tired, too,’ Kyle added. ‘He sounds like he is fresh out of ideas.’

In spite of the teasing remark, Kyle admitted that he genuinely liked Laws. He reminisced about a past incident in 2021 when they crossed paths on his program, where they had a heated exchange with an angry caller named Emmanuel, who expressed his disapproval towards both radio personalities.

‘Lawsy and I, we get on well we’ve had many lunches he tells fabulous stories,’ Kyle said.

In the spirit of camaraderie, he extended an invitation for me to visit his studio after I appeared on his program. Initially, my segment was scheduled for only five minutes, but unexpectedly, it turned into an hour-long adventure! We simply enjoyed each other’s company throughout that time.

Subsequently, Kyle engaged in the conversation that eventually led to Kyle labeling the individual as a rude, overweight person, and Laws expressing his readiness to fracture Emmanuel’s nose.

Back then, I couldn’t help but relive some of my all-time favorite “classic” Laws moments, like the time in 2023 when John himself abruptly ended our conversation, along with the ever-charming Jackie O Henderson. It still brings a smile to my face!

‘It reminded me of a few classic moments,’ Kyle began.

It seems we intended to discuss matters with Lawsy, but he chose not to engage due to the topic Jackie had previously discussed on air – her personal issues concerning her private area.

We were discussing a certain process, and everything seemed clear. However, Lawsy was on pause, but he made it clear that he wasn’t agreeing with the situation.

Jackie was talking about a surgery to remove a uterine polyp.

Originally scheduled for a radio interview, Laws abruptly ended the call when he found Jackie disclosing details about her surgery during the discussion, leaving him unimpressed.

In the course of the conversation, the producer stepped in and disclosed that Laws had ended the call due to being upset by Jackie’s narrative.

John Laws was set to appear on the show, but he was taken aback by Jackie’s discussion about a sensitive topic, so he decided not to attend.” (The pair refers to the two people John told this to.)

Kyle remembered an incident from 2017 involving John Laws and his co-broadcaster Steve Price, which had gained notoriety on the Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa Show where they were both guests.

He appeared on the Fitzy and Wippa radio program, and I was delighted when he expressed agreement about the small, short individual named Steve Price, as he put it.

Subsequently, Kyle reenacted the interaction where Laws labeled Steve as both a “petty fellow” and a “backstabber,” also advising him to find a more polite way of expressing displeasure.

‘I love Lawsy,’ Jackie said after hearing the clip.

‘He’s happy to be rude over at Nova, but he won’t put up with Jackie’s foul mouth,’ Kyle replied.
