Frances Bean Cobain, Kurt Cobain’s daughter, was recently seen with her one-year-old son, Ronin. This was the first time they’ve been spotted publicly since reports surfaced questioning whether her father’s death was actually a suicide, suggesting it might have been a homicide.

Frances Bean Cobain, the 33-year-old daughter of Courtney Love, was seen leaving a car in San Diego with her baby boy on Wednesday. The child’s father is Riley Hawk, son of skateboarding legend Tony Hawk.

Wearing all black—a tank top and baggy pants—Cobain looked worried while cradling her daughter.

This public appearance happened just two weeks after a scary car accident for Love, 62, in Los Angeles. She drove away after hitting a bicyclist, and the incident occurred around the same time a private investigation began looking into the death of Kurt Cobain.

Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, died on April 5, 1994, at the young age of 27. Authorities determined his death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Recently, a team of independent forensic experts re-examined the evidence in the rock star’s death – including autopsy reports and details from the crime scene – which has sparked renewed discussion about what actually happened.

Frances Bean Cobain hasn’t publicly commented on the recent report. She continues to prefer a private life, even though she’s the daughter of Kurt Cobain and her husband is the son of skateboarding icon Tony Hawk.

After getting married in October 2023 and having a baby, Ronin, in September 2024, the couple has primarily kept fans updated through social media posts.

Riley previously explained to People that they simply focus on their own path, regardless of their families’ histories.

To be honest, we don’t give it much thought. It’s just that we often do projects like this, whether it’s related to a video game – like my work on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 – or something involving my wife’s family.

‘But other than that, we’re just a very quiet stay-at-home family. We just hang out.’

Tony Hawk recently shared touching thoughts about family, following the birth of his grandson, Ronin. He expressed sadness that a beloved musician who has passed away will never have the chance to meet the baby.

He shared a ticket stub from a Nirvana concert he saw in Houston in October 1991, recalling how he went straight from an event at Houston Skatepark to the show. He described the concert as a truly transformative experience, something rare and powerful that everyone there felt, and said it felt like a moment that changed everything.

He expressed his hope that Kurt Cobain could be there to see his daughter thriving today. He wished Cobain could meet her loving husband and get to know their beautiful child.

Although the Cobain family generally avoids the spotlight, a recent report examining the circumstances of Kurt Cobain’s death has brought Frances Bean Cobain back into the public conversation.

The forensic investigators working with the family indicated that the evidence suggests someone else may have been involved, rather than it being a suicide.

Bryan Burnett, who specializes in analyzing crime scenes, pointed out several things that didn’t fit with the idea that Kurt Cobain died by suicide. These included unusual blood spatter, the state of his clothing, and the specific injuries to his mouth.

Some investigators believe Cobain might have been confronted by someone who then forced him to overdose on heroin, rendering him unable to defend himself. They suggest he was then shot, and the scene was made to look like a suicide, complete with a faked suicide note.

Love, meanwhile, appears determined not to dwell on alternative theories. 

A source told Daily Mail that while she wishes Kurt could find peace, it doesn’t seem likely. Courtney, instead of focusing on the tragic circumstances of his death, wants to celebrate his life and avoid giving the event any more attention.

For years, Courtney Love has been repeatedly accused by fans of involvement in Kurt Cobain’s death. These accusations include unfounded claims that she arranged for someone to harm him in order to gain control of his money and possessions, but she has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The documentary Antiheroine tells the story of her life, including her relationship with Kurt Cobain, her struggles with addiction, and the constant attention she’s received from the media over the years.

The film, debuting at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Love remembering how she fell in love with Cobain when Hole opened for Nirvana in 1991.

She explained that things felt natural once they found each other. ‘It’s easy when you connect with someone and can truly be yourself,’ she said. They quickly realized they were in love and wanted to start a family, but his desire to completely escape reality created a problem.

Love also recounted the night Cobain died, while she was in rehab.

Cobain reportedly tried to reach her, but the late-night call wasn’t put through. 

His body was discovered three days later in the greenhouse above the garage of his Seattle home.

According to police reports, Cobain had taken a dangerously high amount of heroin, far more than a typical user would. Tests also found other drugs in his system, such as morphine, codeine, and diazepam.

The King County Medical Examiner determined the death was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

According to a Seattle Police Department spokesperson, Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994, and that remains the official stance of the department.
