KTLA taps Melvin Robert to take over ‘Morning News’ post of the late Sam Rubin
KTLA has added a new anchor to its “Morning News” lineup: newscaster Melvin Robert.
On Wednesday, it was officially announced by the L.A. news channel that Robert, a seasoned correspondent and weekend co-host for “Extra,” is set to join their morning shows as their new entertainment anchor and reporter. He will be replacing the late journalist and beloved KTLA personality Sam Rubin in this role.
Variety first broke the news of Robert’s hiring.

Television personality Sam Rubin, long-standing entertainments anchor for KTLA, tragically passed away last Friday following a sudden heart attack. This information has been verified by The Times, and he was 64 years old.
Robert expressed his great joy and gratitude at becoming part of the KTLA 5 team,” he stated. “The history of this show is legendary, and I’m eager to work with so many individuals whom I hold in high esteem. I strongly believe in the strength of connections and the ability they have to bring us all together.
I passionately expressed: “Morning television, just like the arts, is about uniting us all. It’s about revealing the universal threads of our humanity. I eagerly anticipate joining my fellow Southern Californians each morning, and I am dedicated to winning their trust.
At KTLA, Robert takes on a significant role as he steps into the team following the departure of long-time veteran Rubin, who had been the beloved figure of the station’s entertainment news coverage for over three decades. Rubin was admired by both viewers and celebrities for his engaging interviews and amiable demeanor. Sadly, Rubin passed away on May 10 after a heart attack at the age of 64.

The passing of the anchor caused a deep stir within the KTLA newsroom, as his previous co-anchors offered heartfelt tributes both on-air and in interviews with The Times. In their statement on social media, KTLA described him as a towering figure in the local news industry and entertainment world, who had been an enduring presence on Los Angeles morning television for many years.
Starting later this month, Robert will commence his new role as an anchor on our channel, and we at KTLA are excited for viewers to meet our latest addition to the team, who previously did an internship here back in 2000. (Erica Hill-Rodriguez, news director of KTLA, made this statement on Wednesday.)
She expressed her excitement about our audience beginning their days with his unique perspectives on the entertainment industry, and getting a feel for the affection he holds for the community that has been his long-term residence.

Ellen Leyva, a longtime news anchor at KABC-TV Channel 7, has decided to move on after almost three decades. This change signals another adjustment within the local news landscape.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that come March 17, I will kick off my run on KTLA. Born and raised in California, I had the privilege of joining the “Extra” team in 2022, and then moved on to anchor Fox 11 News’ “Good Day LA” in 2023. Being a graduate of Loyola Marymount University, I also have the honor of being among the original anchors at Spectrum News 1.
Last Friday, he formally concluded his stint on “Good Day L.A.”, informing the audience that he was departing to pursue an “incredibly exciting, fresh, and promising career venture.
