Spectators of Broadway star, Kristin Chenoweth, expressed astonishment upon witnessing her openly mourn for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was tragically shot in Utah on a recent Wednesday.
57-year-old actress, known for originating the role of Glinda on stage in Wicked, expressed her sorrow over Kirk’s demise on Wednesday through an Instagram remark on his last post before he was fatally shot by a sniper situated atop a building near Utah Valley University.
The gunman remains at large, as FBI Director Kash Patel journeyed to Utah on Thursday, facing criticism due to the bureau’s slow response in capturing the shooter and for his action of dismissing the renowned special agent from Utah who was expected to spearhead the manhunt, a role he could have taken up merely a month before.
A significant number of Chenoweth’s supporters expressed disapproval towards Kirk because of his stance against abortion rights, immigration, transgender individuals, and his strong support for the Second Amendment.
Due to their anger towards the actress, various individuals on X and Instagram speculated that Chenoweth was a Republican. However, Chenoweth publicly backed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race and has also made fun of President Donald Trump during her performances.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Chenoweth’s spokesperson for a statement, but hasn’t heard back yet.
In response to Kirk’s video advocating against abortion during a debate with a pro-choice college student, Chenoweth expressed her disappointment, acknowledging that she didn’t always share the same views but recognized and valued certain perspectives.
Oh, what a tragedy. He leaves behind a young family, the celebrated actor went on to say. I’m certain he’s in a better place now – heaven. Yet, my heart aches nonetheless.
Chenoweth expressed ongoing grief over Kirk’s passing on her Instagram Stories, posting, “What an unnecessary, tragic, and appalling event! Thoughts and prayers go out to the Kirk family, as well as for our entire nation.
Instead, she responded to her own post by sharing another post from X, expressing it as ‘horrifying’ and ‘unacceptable,’ regarding the murder of Kirk.
‘It’s not necessary to share someone’s views to oppose violence against them. Let’s not make guns more acceptable than their ideologies.’
This rephrased sentence keeps the original message of the quote but is written in a slightly different way and with some variations in the word choice.
In simpler terms, freedom of political expression isn’t synonymous with a war zone in America. If we allow our discourse to devolve into such chaos, everyone – regardless of political affiliation, whether left, right, or center – will be at risk.
Regarding X, Chenoweth faced criticism from some fans who speculated that she might be a Republican because of her tributes to Kirk. However, her advocacy for the LGBTQ community stands in sharp opposition to Kirk’s previously held views.
A user asserted, in all capital letters, that the statement about Kristen Chenoworth being a Republican woman should not need to be repeated so often.
‘Supporting Trump indicates a strong bias, and it’s been suggested that she may have unfair practices towards colleagues of color. Furthermore, there are concerns about her alleged exploitation of the LGBTQ community for personal gain, while her actions appear to be harmful to this community.’

In addition, she publicly showed her backing for the Democrat’s chosen candidate in 2016, joining forces with her co-star from Wicked, Idina Menzel, to create a song advocating for Hillary Clinton’s election.
