Kristen Stewart is entering a new frontier.
Kristen Stewart started acting as a child, appearing in films directed by well-known directors like David Fincher and Jon Favreau. However, she became famous for her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga (2008-2012). Since then, she’s established herself as a highly respected actor, consistently choosing to work with acclaimed directors such as Olivier Assayas and Pablo Larraín.
Alongside her more experimental work, Kristen Stewart has also appeared in mainstream films like the sci-fi thriller Underwater (2020) and a reboot of Charlie’s Angels (2019). Recently, in 2023, she made her directorial debut with a film called The Chronology of Water.
Actress Stephanie Stewart is set to appear on television for the first time in the upcoming Prime Video series, The Challenger. Created by Maggie Cohn and directed by James Hawes, the limited series will feature Stewart as Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, who made her historic journey in 1978. Here’s what the series is about:
“The Challenger” recounts the compelling story of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, detailing both the events that led up to the tragedy and the subsequent investigation. The series focuses on the work of the 1986 Rogers Commission as they examined NASA to determine the cause of the accident, while also exploring the personal story of astronaut Sally Ride, a member of the Commission. We see Sally, alongside her fellow members of the groundbreaking Astronaut Class of ’78, progress through the shuttle program – from their initial selection and training, through the challenges and triumphs of their careers and personal lives, culminating in Sally’s historic achievement as the first American woman in space.
This series tells the story of Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. It follows her experiences as she trained to become an astronaut, breaking down barriers along the way, and her later work on the commission investigating the 1986 Challenger disaster. At only 32 years old, Ride was both the first American woman and the youngest American to travel to space.
I’ve always been so inspired by Sally Ride. She was brilliant – a true astronaut and physicist – and she broke down so many barriers as a woman in science. It was also really moving to learn, after she passed away, about her long and loving relationship with Tam O’Shaughnessy. I was deeply touched by the documentary Sally, and now I’m really excited to see Kristen Stewart bring her incredible story to life in a new film, The Challenger. It feels like a way to really honor everything Sally achieved, both professionally and personally.

Maggie Cohn, the writer and executive producer behind award-winning shows like American Crime Story and Narcos: Mexico, is the creative force behind The Challenger. The series is based on Meredith E. Bagby’s highly praised 2023 book, The New Guys. James Hawes, a BAFTA-nominated director known for Slow Horses and Black Mirror, will direct and also executive produce the show.
The series comes from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and Nevermind Pictures. Kyra Sedgwick of Big Swing Productions and Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, are executive producers and shared the following comments:
Kyra Sedgwick, along with Meredith and Valerie at Big Swing, has been working on this project with great enthusiasm since 2017. We’re incredibly excited to be collaborating with Amblin and Amazon MGM Studios. We believe Maggie Cohn is the perfect person to tell the compelling story of the Challenger and the pioneering astronauts chosen by NASA in the early 1970s, all from the perspective of American hero Sally Ride.
Sally Ride was a truly courageous and brilliant figure who made a lasting impact on history, and we believe Kristen Stewart is the perfect choice to portray her story. The story of the Challenger mission is incredibly inspiring, focusing on overcoming obstacles, and we’re excited to partner with Big Swing Productions, Amblin Television, Nevermind Pictures, Maggie Cohn, and James Hawes to bring it to viewers worldwide on Prime Video.
Kristen Stewart’s upcoming role in The Challenger marks an exciting new phase in her career. Following her first time directing, she’s set to appear in a TV series portraying a significant figure in American history.
