Kristen Stewart has expressed a wish to film movies internationally and then bring them back to the US, especially considering how Hollywood has changed during Donald Trump’s presidency.
The 35-year-old actress had a public disagreement with the now 79-year-old US President back in 2012, before he ran for office. At the time, the President, who had been married three times, publicly criticized her on X (formerly Twitter) during a personal scandal.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, fourteen years after previous comments, Kristen spoke out against Donald Trump and stated she doesn’t believe she can continue living in the United States.
Kristen Stewart recently directed her first film, The Chronology of Water, which is based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s powerful 2011 memoir. The film explores Yuknavitch’s difficult childhood, including experiences with abuse and addiction.
Kristen chose to film the highly praised movie in Latvia, explaining that it simply wouldn’t have been feasible to do so in the United States.
Last year, Donald Trump proposed a 100% tax on all movies filmed outside the United States, claiming they posed a risk to national security. This proposal was made despite the fact that most films, both large and small, are actually produced in multiple countries, including the US.
Kristen called the new tariffs ‘scary’ for filmmakers, and worried she might have to leave the country to continue making movies.
When asked if she planned to continue living in the United States, the Academy Award nominee – who divides her time between Los Angeles and New York – said she likely wouldn’t, explaining that she’s unable to work there without restrictions.
Despite her move to Europe, she still wants to create films that American audiences will see. She explained, ‘I don’t want to stop making movies altogether. I’d like to film in Europe and then find a way to get those movies shown in the US.’
The actor, known for their role in Spencer, criticized Trump, but also expressed optimism about the possibility of positive change. They stated that while Trump has fundamentally altered reality, people should learn from his approach and actively work to build the world they desire.
Back in 2012, Donald Trump publicly criticized Kristen Stewart, posting a series of tweets over a month that focused on her personal relationships, specifically her then-boyfriend Robert Pattinson.
The outburst happened after it was revealed Kristen had an affair with Rupert Sanders, the director of Snow White and the Huntsman. Sanders was married, and Kristen was dating her Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson, at the time.
Donald Trump recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) about actor Robert Pattinson’s relationship. Trump, who famously divorced Ivana Trump for Marla Maples in 1992, warned Pattinson against reconciling with his ex-girlfriend, claiming she was unfaithful and would repeat the behavior. He advised Pattinson he deserves someone better.
The wealthy and influential figure continued his rant on Twitter, posting messages like: ‘Everyone agrees with me – Robert Pattinson needs to break up with Kristen Stewart. He’ll realize I was right in a few years. Think about it, Robert.’
‘Lots of response to my Pattinson/reunion. She will cheat again–100 certain–am I ever wrong?’
Robert Pattinson seems to be handling the release of Twilight well. He followed my suggestion, or at least, I’m hoping he did!
I’m worried that after the release of the new Twilight movie on Friday, Robert Pattinson’s girlfriend might be unfaithful to him again, and I hope they avoid being seen together in public.
Years after the outburst, Kristen described it as ‘insane’ in an interview with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival, which happened to be the same day Donald Trump was inaugurated.
She explained that he was very fixated on her a couple of years ago, and she found it unsettling. She expressed her confusion, saying, “What?”
I just don’t understand it at all. It’s such a strange and unbelievable idea that I’m having trouble accepting it’s real. It’s completely wild.
At the time, he was just known as a reality TV personality, and I didn’t think much of it. Looking back, someone pointed it out to me, and I realized they were absolutely right!
She also playfully joked about her strange past with the man who was now President when she hosted Saturday Night Live in February 2017.
After sharing some of his tweets about the cheating allegations, she playfully suggested that Donald Trump didn’t dislike her, but rather had feelings for her boyfriend.
Kristen concluded her statement with a bold remark, saying, ‘Donald, if you didn’t approve of me before, you definitely won’t now that I’m hosting Saturday Night Live and openly embracing my identity.’
Last April, the actor married his partner, Dylan Meyer, in a private ceremony at the Mexican restaurant Casita Del Campo. They had been dating for six years prior to the wedding.
The couple is said to have first met in 2013 while working on the set of the action comedy film, American Ultra, directed by Nima Nourizadeh.
Kristen and Dylan, both 38, started their own production company, Nevermind Pictures, along with Maggie Mclean in 2023.
