Kristen Stewart says she’s deeply affected by Princess Diana, feeling almost haunted by her memory. She admits she can unexpectedly burst into tears just thinking about the late royal.
In the 2021 film Spencer, the 35-year-old actress played Princess Diana, who tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 at the age of 36.
Kristen shared that she gets emotional whenever she remembers Diana, and thinking about the Princess often overwhelms her when she’s driving in London or Paris.
She admitted she still feels deeply affected by Princess Diana, telling the Daily Telegraph that she often thinks of her while driving in London and Paris. She described the immense love Diana gave and said she can easily be overcome with emotion when remembering her.
The American actress was shocked that director Pablo Larrain chose her to play the British royal and asked him to find someone else, but he wouldn’t change his mind.
She explained that she told Pablo he was being unreasonable and needed to find someone else, but he wouldn’t listen. She also pointed out that they had very different perspectives and approaches.
It was her overall appearance that struck me, but especially her eyes. I have green eyes, and she’s known for her bright blue ones – the same shade as her ring. That made me wonder if we should get an engagement ring with a green stone to match.
People were trying to overwhelm me, but Pablo told me to let go of material possessions and focus on what truly matters – my inner self.
Director Pablo, age 49, continued to work with Kristen in the role of Diana because he felt they shared similar life experiences.
Similar to Princess Diana, Kristen Stewart was very young and inexperienced when she became famous in the Twilight movies during the 2000s and 2010s, and she faced a lot of attention from the media.
Near the conclusion of filming ‘Spencer’, Kristen Stewart shared that she felt emotionally empty, a feeling she connected with what Princess Diana likely experienced towards the end of her marriage to Prince Charles.
Kristen received her first Oscar nomination for this role, but Jessica Chastain won the award for her performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
Spencer focuses on three days of the late royal’s life in 1991.
This news follows Kristen’s recent disclosure that she was advised to keep her relationships with women private. She decided to come out because she wanted to live authentically and fully, rather than feeling like she was only showing part of herself.
The actress is currently married to screenwriter Dylan Meyer. She has also previously dated French singer Soko and model Stella Maxwell.
She identified as bisexual in a 2017 interview. However, later that year, during a Saturday Night Live performance, she playfully referred to herself as ‘so gay’ while speaking about Donald Trump.
Kristen explained to Linsey Davis on ABC News Live Prime Time why she decided to talk about her sexuality on the show.
She explained that it wasn’t really about revealing personal details of her relationship, but rather about recognizing that some people can’t fully live their lives because they feel they have to hide who they are.
Kristen revealed that people close to her – those she loved and trusted – cautioned her against publicly displaying her relationships with women, suggesting it could harm her career. She explained that she’d received advice from people she knew, loved, and still trusts, who believed her career would improve if she kept those relationships private.
I realized they were asking me to accept a limited existence and support a system that intentionally leaves people out. I simply couldn’t agree to that.
The director of ‘Chronology of Water’ explained that the media attention on her dating life made it clear to everyone what was happening, even before she publicly came out.
She explained that she wasn’t initially interested in appearing in a comic book. However, her main concern wasn’t the comic itself, but rather a desire to openly address the realities of the world around us, instead of ignoring them.
I want to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment, and I felt it was important to start by being open about my relationship – I was already comfortable holding my girlfriend’s hand in public.
She explained that she’s never held back in relationships out of fear of being vulnerable. In fact, she’s always wanted people to truly know her.
I understood their perspective, so I didn’t feel the need to explain further. However, I realized what I said could help others understand things too.
Kristen began dating her now wife in 2019 and they married in April 2025.
