Kris Marshall says he’d return to beloved BBC show after 14 years under one condition
Kris Marshall shares that he’d rejoin the popular BBC sitcom “My Family,” provided a specific term is met.
The actor, who is best known these days for appearing in Beyond Paradise, originally rose to fame as Nick Harper on the comedy, which came to an end in 2011.
In response to a conversation with Metro, Marshall has stated that he would require something exceptional to persuade him to return.
Speaking from personal experience, I found my family simply outstanding! If given the chance to reimagine it, I’d set it in a context that truly showcased its brilliance. Nick Harper, as you may know, was a character deeply rooted in his era.
“I was 27 when I started, but I was playing 19, so he was a very youthful character. I’m not quite as youthful anymore so it would have to be something really special. But never say never.”
The star also acknowledged that he watches the program alongside his immediate family, stating: “I find My Family particularly appealing because they air reruns on some of the free-to-air channels now. Consequently, I’ve caught a few episodes with my children, and one of them once asked, ‘Dad, just how young do you look?’ My kids can be quite playful at times.
“Also, a lot of comedy doesn’t age very well for obvious reasons, or for not-so-obvious reasons, and I think it really stands up. I don’t think I’m biased here because I’m quite critical of my work.”
The star confessed that one challenge he finds particularly tough is observing himself on-screen, as he mentioned: “This was something I grappled with during my early days in acting, and it doesn’t become any simpler as you grow older because then you see yourself ageing on the screen.
“My wife says I pull a particular face when I’m watching myself on screen – like I look like I’m in pain – but it’s not a necessarily bad thing.
As a gamer, when reflecting on a challenging scene I’ve just witnessed, I like to think about how I handled it and what I can learn from that experience. How could I approach similar situations differently in the future to improve my gaming skills? This introspection helps me grow as a player and enhances my overall gaming experience.
Fans will be able to see Marshall back on screen as DI Humphrey Goodman when Beyond Paradise returns later this month, while before that he will appear as the detective in a crossover special with Not Going Out for Comic Relief.
Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
