Kris Jenner is fondly remembering her sister, Karen Houghton, today, which would have been Karen’s 67th birthday.
Last year, a mother and manager publicly shared the sad news of her sister’s unexpected death. The death certificate indicated the cause of death was cardiac arrest and an irregular heartbeat, with Type 2 diabetes listed as a contributing factor.
Jenner, age 70, had a complicated relationship with her sister. They often traded insults, but their mother frequently showered the sister with expensive presents.
On Monday Jenner uploaded various photos with her sister as she marked her ‘heavenly birthday.’
She wrote a heartfelt message wishing her sister, Karen, a happy birthday in heaven. She shared that she thinks of Karen daily, misses her deeply, loves her, and believes Karen is still watching over their family.
Oh my gosh, I’ve been pouring over these photos of them for hours! It started with a picture from Kris and Robert Kardashian’s wedding – she looked amazing! Then there were so many pictures of them celebrating holidays together, and just… life. It’s like seeing their whole story unfold, one precious memory after another. I can’t get enough!
According to TMZ, the individual died of cardiac arrest triggered by an irregular heartbeat. Type 2 diabetes was also listed as a contributing factor.
Karen and Kris were sisters who grew up in San Diego. After their parents divorced, they were mainly raised by their mother, MJ, following the split from their father, Robert Houghton.
‘It is with the heaviest heart and deepest sadness that I share that my sister Karen passed away yesterday unexpectedly,’ Jenner wrote at the time.
I’m heartbroken for my mom, MJ, and my niece, Natalie. I’m praying for strength and guidance for all of us as we cope with this loss. Karen was a beautiful person, both inside and out – incredibly sweet, kind, sensitive, and had a wonderful sense of humor.
She was deeply appreciative of her life and held her family and friends, especially her wonderful daughter, very dear. I treasure the memories we’ve shared and she means the world to me.
The loss of Karen reminds us how quickly life passes and that we shouldn’t take anything for granted. It’s a powerful message to express our love to the people we care about while we still can. I love you, my dear sister.
Kris and Karen had long endured a rollercoaster relationship.
In 2019, Karen’s daughter, Natalie, shared an Instagram Story that showed the two had gotten back together.
The sisters, despite their ongoing disagreement, happily posed for a photo with their famous cousin Kylie Jenner and their mother, Mary Jo Campbell.
Karen, a part-time nurse, gained a reputation as the family rebel in 2013 when she unexpectedly spoke openly to the press outside Kim Kardashian’s baby shower and playfully danced for the reporters who were waiting there.
Even though she signed a confidentiality agreement for the event, Karen excitedly shared details about the food, like s’mores and a rose-shaped cake, and the gifts they received, claiming Kim and Kanye West handed out Rolex watches.
Karen had frequently been outspoken when her sister Kris has riled her.
In 2013, Karen alleged that Kris had undergone $1 million worth of cosmetic surgery, reportedly due to insecurities about her weight from her youth.
Karen shared with In Touch magazine that she was a larger child and began to feel self-conscious about her appearance around age 15.
She added: ‘The whole world knows it – Kris is vain.’
Jenner has publicly discussed having multiple breast augmentations and a facelift, and she recently had another facelift procedure.
Back in 2014, Karen shared with Radar that Kris and her soon-to-be ex-husband, Bruce, wouldn’t be getting back together, even though they appeared amicable.
Karen told me Bruce left and doesn’t seem to be returning. Apparently, he couldn’t handle the constant arguing anymore, so he just left her.
She mentioned Kris was really struggling with the breakup, explaining, “I believe she’s dealing with a lot of emotional difficulties since Bruce left.”
‘Kris is alone, she’s not dating. She’s not the type to run around.’
She shared these remarks following a Facebook post from April 2014, where she wrote, ‘Pray for Kris Jenner, she needs it…crazy. She’s a nutcase.’
Honestly, I’m just so frustrated with the situation. Someone online said she needs ‘sky vodka’ – a bit harsh, I know, but it shows how many of us feel! And Karen, her sister, explained it best. She’s really hurt because her sister just doesn’t respond to her at all. It’s like she’s being ignored, and it genuinely pains her. It’s not about needing prayers, it’s about wanting a simple response from family.
The part-time nurse also joked about herself in a Facebook post from May 2014, saying, ‘Be someone’s crazy aunt…it’s fabulous! !! K [sic]’
Karen blamed her sibling’s celebrity status and hunger for fame and fortune.
She emphasized that her sister’s wealth or status didn’t matter to her, stating that she wasn’t intimidated by her. She explained she’s no longer in contact with her sister, and believes the issue stems from money.
She’s become very famous, and it’s definitely changed her. I’m not judging whether that’s a positive or negative change, but I’ve witnessed firsthand how it’s affected Kris since she relocated to Los Angeles.
Let me tell you, family dynamics can be tough, even with all the success in the world. I’ve definitely had moments where I needed to have a really direct conversation with Kris. It mostly revolved around making sure our mom, Karen, was getting the care she deserved as she’s gotten older. Honestly, there was one time I just lost it on the phone with her. I was pretty upset, and I just laid it all out there – told her she needed to step up and help more with Mom, and I think it got through to her. I wasn’t worried about being polite at that moment, I just needed her to understand!
The incident happened after Kris shared in a 2013 interview with Radar that her sister had been struggling with personal issues for a long time.
Back in 2014, the former flight attendant explained to Radar that she struggled to understand her mother’s desires. Specifically, her mother wanted to move to La Jolla and asked her to buy a condo for her, which she found confusing. She said she didn’t think she’d ever understand her mother’s personality, despite their close family ties and expressed love for each other.
In her 2011 autobiography, the star described her sister, saying they shared a loving and supportive relationship that continues to this day.
In 2016, Karen showed Kris Jenner the highest form of flattery by undergoing a significant facelift, hoping to resemble her ‘beautiful sister’.
