Kreese’s Death in Cobra Kai Season 6 Spells Big Changes for New Karate Kid Movie

In the last season of ‘Cobra Kai’, Martin Kove’s character Sensei John Kreese meets his demise. This leaves the upcoming movie ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ with an intriguing dilemma, given that Kreese has been a significant and long-lasting villain in the entire Karate Kid series, shaping the saga for decades. However, his death towards the end of ‘Cobra Kai’ means he can no longer reappear in future projects. Despite his exit in a fight with Terry Silver (played by Thomas Ian Griffith) fitting perfectly with his character, the absence of Martin Kove’s portrayal impacts ‘Legends’.

The film titled “Karate Kid: Legends” is scheduled for a cinema release on May 30, 2025. While it maintains continuity with all previous Karate Kid movies and Cobra Kai series episodes, this story stands independently and subtly alludes to the franchise’s past events. The main cast from the long-running saga includes Ralph Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso, and Jackie Chan returning as Mr. Han from the 2010 Karate Kid remake. However, the central character of this movie will be Ben Wang’s Li Fong.

Kreese’s Death Means Karate Kid Has Lost Its Most Important Villain

Martin Kove now can’t appear in the upcoming legacy sequel

Kreese has consistently been a significant adversary within the Karate Kid series, often manipulating events from behind the scenes. However, he transitioned into a more active and menacing role in subsequent installments, particularly in Cobra Kai. The Netflix spin-off series even delved into his past, giving him a more sympathetic portrayal, making him more relatable rather than purely evil. Unfortunately, due to his dramatic demise in the sixth season of Cobra Kai, it seems unlikely that he’ll return to wreak havoc again in Karate Kid: Legends.

It’s plausible that Kreese’s death might have been a trick, and the show “Legends” could uncover he somehow survived the fire on the boat. Nevertheless, I find it unlikely for several reasons. For one, if Kreese were to make a sudden return, it would overshadow the upcoming chapter of the franchise, and also necessitate knowledge of “Cobra Kai” events – which is something “Legends” aims to avoid. Thus, keeping Kreese deceased seems more straightforward and logical, despite it being a tragic turn of events.

Karate Kid: Legends Needs A Villain That Can Live Up To Kreese

Sensei Kreese needs to be suitably replaced

The success of the Karate Kid series is built upon its formidable villains, and Kreese stands out as one of the best. He has established a benchmark for what a villain in this saga should embody. Although he won’t appear in the 2025 movie Legends, the film can leverage his extensive history to mold his successor in the upcoming sequel, ensuring continuity within the legacy of the series. If the new antagonist fails to match Kreese’s intensity, the story may find it challenging to leave a lasting impression.

In essence, since Kreese’s character has been developed over multiple films instead of just one, it creates a significant hurdle for the production of Legends. However, if we find the right actor and an exceptional script, a new antagonist could potentially take over the void left by Kove’s character. It won’t be a walk in the park to pull this off, but that doesn’t mean Legends should shy away from making a valiant effort.

Will Karate Kid: Legends Give The Franchise Its New John Kreese?

No true successor to Kreese has yet been revealed

Currently, it seems like the main antagonist in Karate Kid: Legends could be Li Fong’s rival, given that the storyline is generally mirroring the original 1984 movie and its 2010 sequel. To put it another way, they have a character standing in for Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), but as of now, there doesn’t appear to be a new character similar to John Kreese. Essentially, whether the 2025 film will introduce the sensei of Li Fong’s martial arts rival or if Karate Kid: Legends will opt against introducing another John Kreese is yet to be seen.

Since Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) had a good rapport with Johnny’s teacher, it could be interesting to introduce a new villain resembling Kreese as part of the Legends series. This would allow Daniel and Mr. Han to have more significant roles beyond just training their student. While not essential if they are expected to play secondary characters in Karate Kid: Legends, this addition could serve as a fitting replacement for Kreese following his death in Cobra Kai, maintaining continuity with the original series.
