Kraven the Hunter is currently tracking to make less than disgraced superhero movie
As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with a soft spot for superhero films, I can’t help but feel a tad disheartened by the upcoming release of “Kraven the Hunter.” It seems like Sony is setting itself up for another box office disappointment, given the lackluster promotion efforts and the crowded release schedule.
The movie featuring Kraven the Hunter, titled “Kraven the Hunter,” is set to premiere on December 13th. However, if you haven’t noticed its upcoming release, it’s understandable given that Sony hasn’t been actively promoting this film. Unfortunately, this lack of promotion could potentially lead to a situation where the movie underperforms at the box office as we approach the end of 2024.
Initial predictions for the movie “Kraven the Hunter,” starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, anticipate its opening weekend earnings to be between $20-$25 million. If these estimates are accurate, “Kraven the Hunter” would have a significantly lower box office opening weekend than Sony’s critically maligned film, “Morbius,” led by Jared Leto. In fact, the projected earnings for “Kraven the Hunter” are nearly half of what “Morbius” actually earned during its opening weekend, pulling in $39 million domestically.
It’s quite unfortunate that despite Kraven the Hunter appearing as if it could be a great movie, initial predictions suggest it might earn less at the box office during its debut weekend than Morbius. However, given recent trends, this outcome isn’t all that surprising to us.
The movie in question isn’t getting much marketing push from Sony, which is a challenge considering it’s set to debut shortly after the release of heavyweight films like Wicked, Gladiator II, and Moana 2, all of which have received extensive promotional efforts. Additionally, Sony’s recent live-action Marvel films haven’t been as successful, with only Spider-Man and Venom standing out as hits. This track record might deter some potential moviegoers.
The positive aspect is that Kraven the Hunter is expected to earn more than Madame Web, which managed only $15 million domestically upon its release in February, setting a new low for superhero openings. However, it appears that Kraven the Hunter won’t become the box-office success that Sony initially anticipated when they initiated the project.
There’s a possibility that the film might surpass our expectations, and we certainly hope it does. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that this will be the best comic book movie of the year or end it on a high note. If the predictions hold true, then it appears Sony might be in for another significant disappointment.
The 2024 superhero movie opening weekend totals haven’t been the best
2021 hasn’t been kind to domestic box office sales of superhero films, with Kraven the Hunter set to conclude a year that saw more failures than triumphs in this genre.
As a die-hard fan, I must admit that back in February 2024, it was Madame Web who set the stage, but not quite as we’d hoped. Her debut weekend only managed an abysmal $15 million, marking the smallest opening for a high-budget superhero film. Thankfully, Venom: The Last Dance followed suit, earning $51 million during its first weekend at the domestic box office. However, it was bittersweet as this opening marked the lowest debut for any Venom movie.
2024 didn’t bring much cheering from my side of the gaming screen, not with DC Studios. The much-anticipated “Joker: Folie à Deux” underperformed big time, raking in just $40 million during its opening weekend at the box office.
It was only Marvel Studios that had a reason to cheer this year, as their sole 2024 release, the film “Deadpool and Wolverine,” was nothing short of sensational. In its first weekend in U.S. theaters, it earned an astounding $211 million. Not only did this figure make “Deadpool and Wolverine” the highest-grossing superhero movie of 2024, but it also boasted the largest opening weekend earnings of any film released in 2024. The opening weekend earnings of “Deadpool and Wolverine” are almost twice as much as the combined opening weekend takings of “Madame Web,” “Venom: The Last Dance,” and “Joker: Folie à Deux.
