Remember Jack Sparrow seemingly being pulled to his death by the Kraken in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest? Well, the monstrous creature is back – this time in a new Norwegian action-horror film from the director of The Tunnel. Following the success of recent Nordic horror hits like Troll, this Kraken movie looks set to be your next chilling obsession.
Kraken centers around marine biologist Johanne, who begins investigating strange events happening in a local fjord. As dangerous incidents pile up, she discovers a frightening legend hidden beneath the waves – a massive, many-armed creature poised to wreak destruction. This legendary beast seems intent on punishing those harming the environment, fitting into the growing trend of climate change-themed monster movies.
I just saw the trailer for Kraken, and it looks really intriguing! Samuel Goldwyn Films is distributing it, and they’re smart to show just enough to get you hooked without giving everything away. It’s directed by Pål Øie and stars Sara Khorami, along with Mikkel Bratt Silset, Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes, Øyvind Brandtzæg, Jenny Evensen, and Steinar Klouman Hallert. The Kraken Has Appeared Many Times on Screen
The Kraken, like many legendary monsters, has been depicted in various ways throughout history, but it’s consistently portrayed as a massive, tentacled creature that attacks ships. Though some animated versions, such as in Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken and Deep, are more lighthearted, the Kraken’s live-action appearances are terrifying enough to make anyone think twice about a Caribbean cruise.
The Kraken, a massive sea monster, appears in two different versions of the film Clash of the Titans. The original 1981 movie featured a stunning stop-motion animation of the creature by Ray Harryhausen, while the 2010 remake used more modern CGI. The Kraken also shows up in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest as the pet of Davy Jones, where it attacks Jack Sparrow and pulls both him and The Black Pearl underwater.
Norwegian horror films often deliver chilling, atmospheric monster stories that focus on suspense rather than special effects. The 2022 film Troll, which is getting a sequel, featured impressively designed creatures, and the upcoming film Kraken promises the same. American audiences can expect to see Kraken in theaters and on streaming platforms in early 2026.
