KPop Demon Hunters: “What It Sounds Like” Deserves More Love

While “Golden” is a fantastic pop song, it doesn’t quite capture the essence of KPop Demon Hunters. I recently saw a sing-along screening of the film—Netflix brought it back to theaters for Halloween, just two months after its already incredibly successful original release—and it was amazing to experience the movie with a crowd who knew all the songs by heart.

It’s amazing how much people connected with the movie KPop Demon Hunters – from fans shouting for a ‘fit check’ during ‘How It’s Done’ to the whole audience moving to the beat of ‘Soda Pop’! While all the songs are great and fit the story well, ‘Golden’ is definitely the most popular track.

Following the success of “Golden” topping the Billboard Global 200 chart, HUNTR/X quickly gained popularity. The song became widely associated with the KPop Demon Hunters, and Rumi, Mira, and Zoey even performed it on The Tonight Show. However, despite how amazing and moving “Golden” is, another HUNTR/X song is equally deserving of recognition.

“What It Sounds Like” Is The True Heart Of KPop Demon Hunters

While “Golden” initially seemed like the song that would define the Honmoon, “What It Sounds Like” ultimately became the track that truly captured the transformation Rumi described. “Golden” is about breaking free from old habits and embracing a new identity, but within the story, it wasn’t actually about finding self-acceptance.

Celine’s song “Golden” tells the story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, powerful women who felt pressured to hide their weaknesses and fears. They strived for perfection, avoiding any confrontation with their inner struggles. It’s not until the song “What It Sounds Like” that their authentic selves finally emerge – a song they were previously unable to create.

“What It Sounds Like” is a deeply emotional experience for everyone involved, especially the artist Huntrix. Rumi realizes she doesn’t need to change who she is, and finds strength in her imperfections. Similarly, Mira and Zoey learn to accept themselves, flaws and all.

Okay, I’ll be honest, “What It Sounds Like” isn’t their most immediately catchy song, not like “Golden” or “Soda Pop.” It really needs the movie to work its magic. The lyrics and the music are so connected to what’s happening on screen – things like that really sweet group hug and Jinu’s heartbreaking moment – that without those visuals, the song just doesn’t hit the same way. It’s powerful because of the movie, you know?

“Golden” Has Become Bigger Than KPop Demon Hunters

Although I wish “What It Sounds Like” had been more popular, “Golden” truly earned its success. Even though the song’s lyrics touch on sadness, “Golden” is ultimately a lovely and empowering message about finding the courage to create your own future, regardless of what’s happened before or the challenges you’ve overcome.

EJAE, the singer and co-writer of “Golden,” has shared how meaningful the song is to her. Having once been a K-pop trainee, she transformed her own challenges into this empowering song, which is now resonating with listeners worldwide.

While the character of Rumi might evolve beyond the core message of the song “Golden” within the story, the song itself is incredibly uplifting. “Golden” is to KPop Demon Hunters what “Let It Go” is to Frozen – it might not completely capture the main character’s journey, but it will always be strongly linked to the story.
