‘KPop Demon Hunters’ creator sees potential for more Huntr/x — but not in live action

Maggie Kang, the creator of “KPop Demon Hunters,” believes there’s room for future stories featuring Huntr/x, but she envisions them being told through animation.

The co-director of the popular Netflix series recently told the BBC that while there are no current plans for a sequel, she believes there’s potential for future stories with these characters. She and her co-director, Chris Appelhans, also promised fans that any follow-up would only happen if they could create a story worthy of the original, and one they themselves would be excited about.

Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, the singers from the KPop group Huntrix, performed their platinum single ‘Golden’ live on ‘The Tonight Show’.

This animated movie from Sony Pictures Animation centers around a famous K-pop girl group who also happen to have magical abilities. They use their music, dancing, and powers to battle demons and save the world. However, the group’s leader, Rumi, is hiding a secret from her bandmates, Mira and Zoey, which could cause everything to fall apart.

Since it premiered in June, “KPop Demon Hunters” has become a huge hit on Netflix and with music fans, breaking several records on both platforms. Its popularity even led to special sing-along showings in theaters and live concerts of the movie’s songs.

Given Hollywood’s focus on sequels and reboots, many might expect “KPop Demon Hunters” to become a larger franchise. However, the creators, Kang and Appelhans, are firm that a live-action version shouldn’t be made.

Kang explained to the BBC that adapting the characters from “KPop” into a live-action format would be difficult. He felt the show’s humor and overall style wouldn’t translate well to a more realistic setting, and wouldn’t be something he’d be interested in pursuing.

World & Nation

The American movie ‘K-pop Demon Hunters’ has become very popular in South Korea by including references to Korean stories, popular trends, and everyday life.

Appelhans thought the characters in “KPop Demon Hunters” would work much better as animation than in a live-action format, fearing a live-action version might seem unnatural and stiff.

Animation is fantastic because it lets you combine unbelievable qualities in a character,” explained Appelhans to the BBC. “For example, Rumi can be a silly, funny character one moment, then suddenly be singing and doing a backflip, and then falling from the sky. That’s the beauty of animation – it allows you to go beyond what’s realistically possible and create something truly amazing.

Currently, Huntr/x appears destined to excel solely within the world of animation – the medium where they first gained recognition.
