A new trailer hints at the return of Kong in season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. This live-action series, available on Apple TV+, is part of Legendary’s Monsterverse, the same universe as films like Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla x Kong. The first season aired from November 2023 to January 2024, and the show was quickly renewed for a second season in April 2024.
Apple TV has shared a first look at season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, set to premiere on February 27, 2026. The new teaser begins with footage resembling a home video of surfers, who are quickly forced to leave the water when the beach is declared a dangerous area due to the presence of titans.
While surfers enjoy the beach, unexpected creatures—small, spiky monsters—burst from the sand and attack. The scene then cuts to fast-paced clips from the show, which tells the story of the Monarch organization as they investigate and track the massive monsters, known as Titans, that have been found around the world.
As a huge monster movie fan, I was really hooked by the new trailer! They’ve given us some fantastic shots – like Kong seen from a helicopter at night, and Cate Randa with her hair whipping around in a crazy windstorm. There’s a really chilling moment with young Lee Shaw looking up, clearly terrified, and another with modern-day Lee frantically trying to escape a sea monster in a boat – it honestly looks like he’s getting dragged underwater! You absolutely have to check out the teaser – it’s intense!
The new season of Monarch will bring back Kong, who hasn’t appeared in a movie since Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire released in March 2024. That film came out about three months after the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ended. Kong did make a brief appearance in the final episode of that first season, but the season mostly followed Godzilla and other massive creatures.
The latest preview doesn’t feature Godzilla, suggesting the season will primarily focus on Kong and his world. Although Kong’s appearances might be infrequent, similar to how often Godzilla appeared in the first season, this change could give the show a chance to explore Kong’s story more deeply before the release of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova in 2027.
The trailer hints that Kurt Russell might be back in the Monsterverse, following his character’s disappearance into a strange blue portal. It also confirms the return of Wyatt Russell and Anna Sawai, who starred in the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters with Kiersey Clemons, Joe Tippett, Mari Yamamoto, Elisa Lasowski, and Anders Holm.
