Despite receiving very negative reviews, the sci-fi thriller *Alien: Rubicon* – a film inspired by the popular *Alien* franchise – has surprisingly become a popular streaming choice in the UK. It leaves viewers wondering: is it enjoyably bad, or simply not good?
The 2024 movie comes from The Asylum, a company known for making and releasing low-budget films quickly. These films are often based on popular movies from bigger studios.
This science fiction thriller is inspired by – or playfully imitates – the movie *Alien: Romulus*. It shows the chaos that breaks out when an alien spaceship crashes near New York City.

Even though it wasn’t made with a large budget, the sci-fi thriller *Alien: Rubicon* is performing very well, currently ranking as the #3 movie on Prime Video in the UK. It’s only behind *Marching Powder* and *The London Railway Murders*, according to data from FlixPatrol.

The movie debuted at number four on the chart last Saturday, September 20th, and held that spot on Sunday. It moved down to fifth place on Monday, but has since climbed back up two spots, suggesting it will remain popular for a while.
Although the film attracted a lot of viewers, critics haven’t been impressed – similar to other movies from The Asylum. Currently, it has a very low user rating on IMDb, averaging just 2.4 out of 10 based on 760 reviews.
One viewer called this movie the “worst I’ve seen this century,” saying it felt like a collection of bad acting and was a complete waste of money and time.

One viewer expressed extreme disappointment, saying, “This is as bad as it gets.” They warned others not to waste their time, adding that it’s a letdown and a disgrace to the series it’s connected to.
The Asylum is known for creating low-budget movies that often imitate bigger blockbusters – they’re playfully called ‘mockbusters’. Some of their other films include the *Sharknado* and *Mega Shark* series, *Meth Gator* (which is similar to *Cocaine Bear*), and *Monster Island*, a movie inspired by *Godzilla: King of the Monsters*.
Alien: Rubicon is streaming on Prime Video now.
