Knives Out’s Jamie Lee Curtis Is Returning To The Mystery Genre In A Truly Iconic Role

The genre of mysteries remains strong in modern popular culture, as seen by the surge in popularity of shows like “Only Murders in the Building”. Additionally, Rian Johnson’s 2019 film “Knives Out” is often credited with kick-starting a resurgence of whodunits. Notably, among its star-studded cast was Jamie Lee Curtis, a veteran in all things thrilling and horror (often referred to as the top scream queen). Her most memorable films carry mystery titles that have boosted her career, and now she is adding a distinguished detective role on television to her repertoire.

The big confirmation came from Curtis herself while on the premiere carpet for her latest release, Freakier Friday. When ET asked about whether or not we could expect The Fog actress to take on Murder She Wrote’s Jessica Fletcher, the A-lister revealed all that she could. After taking a beat, she said that it’s in the works but not to expect it anytime soon, and she’s trying to keep cool about the project until she’s on set. Per their Instagram clip, she said:

Sure thing! “Oh, things are about to kick off soon. To be honest, I can hardly contain my excitement, but I’m trying to keep a cool head until we get started.

The Halloween star’s recent unexpected disclosure is quite exciting, given that the original mystery series was and continues to be a significant part of the genre. And when it comes to an actress who could embody an Angela Lansbury character, Jamie Lee Curtis is definitely one of the top contenders for the role. I can hardly fathom how she must feel about having Jessica Fletcher ready to step in – that has to be a wild sensation!

She calmly went on to disclose that there are several other projects lined up for her, such as two movies scheduled for 2025, along with a return to FX’s “The Bear” and a Disney sequel. Following these projects, she’ll be eager to take on the role in question. (This year, she’s also set to appear in James L. Brooks’ comedy drama “Ella McCay.”)

Absolutely, what I meant was, I’ve got a few other tasks to attend to first, after which I can delve into that project with pleasure.

The seasoned actress takes everything in stride, with an impressive lineup this year and possibly three more projects on the horizon, contingent on scheduling conflicts. Two suspenseful films she’s involved with are titled “Sender” and “Psychosis,” while she also looks forward to the adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s “Scarpetta” book series for the screen. Given her knack for playing chilling characters, any of these projects will serve as an excellent prelude to Fletcher’s upcoming film debut.

Following the announcement that Jamie Lee Curtis is involved in Murder She Wrote, one mystery has been solved, but many others are now emerging, such as when production on this massive detective series will commence. I’m optimistic it might appear in the 2026 movie lineup, but for now, we can only wait and see how things develop. In the meantime, you can enjoy the original series with an Amazon Prime subscription.
