The release date has been set, which means fans of *Game of Thrones* and *House of the Dragon* will soon be able to return to the world of Westeros! Although 2026 seems distant, this six-episode series, based on a story by George R.R. Martin, is expected to be excellent. The first season will follow Duncan the Tall, a knight, and his young squire, Egg.
Fans who have read *The Hedge Knight* already know Egg’s big secret, but *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* will quickly reveal it. The series seems committed to closely following the original story, and with each episode lasting around 30 minutes, it promises a deliberate and focused pace. It’s yet to be seen if the show will expand on other characters, but hopefully it will give us more insight into a love story that’s been developing for years.
Tanselle Too Tall Is Introduced As a Potential Love Interest
In *The Hedge Knight*, the story centers around a tournament that Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, gets involved in. He enters hoping to earn honor, improve his reputation, and make some money – his plan is to win a few matches and leave without getting seriously hurt. However, things quickly go wrong, and the tournament gets off to a difficult start. Dunk unexpectedly finds himself interacting with the royal family, who are still in power during this period before the events of *Game of Thrones*.
Despite the unexpected turn of events, Dunk fights to restore his honor, but not in the way he imagined. He finds himself defending his innocence in a trial by combat against the Seven after bravely rescuing a kind young woman from the harassment of a prince. This act of heroism leads to a royal assault, branding Dunk as a criminal and dishonorable knight. Now, he must prove his worth, and the story follows his journey as he gathers allies and prepares for a fierce battle.
Later episodes of *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* will likely depict the tournament scene, but it’s important to understand the connection between Dunk and Tanselle Too Tall, as their relationship causes Dunk a lot of problems. Tanselle, who works with the puppet shows, comes across as shy but is a gifted artist. She believes people overlook her because of her height, but Dunk, being tall himself, quickly connects with her. Their friendship blossoms, hinting at a possible romance. Notably, Tanselle designs Dunk’s shield – an emblem he carries with him throughout his career.
Dunk hasn’t had much luck with love and isn’t used to anyone paying him attention, so he’s completely taken aback when Tanselle shows him affection. This is why he rushed to defend her when her honor was challenged. The Prince wrongly believed her puppet show disrespected the Targaryen family, but it was actually a delightful display of her incredible talent as a storyteller. Dunk recognized Tanselle as a vibrant and courageous young woman who deserved better circumstances. Their connection is central to the first story, and the author has hinted that Tanselle will continue to be an important character.
Dunk Never Finds the Damsel Again
The confusion following Dunk’s defense led Tanselle to believe she needed to escape immediately. Knowing the prince was displeased with her, she sought safety by going into hiding, wanting to avoid recognition and the consequences of her perceived wrongdoing. Tanselle flees, leaving Dunk to fight on alone, a heartbreaking turn of events as he loses his chance at a relationship with her. Despite her brief appearance, Tanselle makes a strong impression, and many readers of *The Hedge Knight* hope she will reappear in future stories.
I’ve always been fascinated by Dunk, and it’s a little heartbreaking to see him so often on the verge of finding love, only to have it slip away. He had a connection with Rohanne Webber, but even that didn’t quite work out. Instead, he spends a lot of time thinking about Tanselle, wondering what might have been if things had gone differently. It’s clear he deeply desired a family, and it’s always been a bit sad to know, as a reader familiar with the history of Westeros, that he never got that chance and continued to search for that special someone throughout his life.
After the events of *The Hedge Knight*, Dunk and Egg travel to Dorne, following rumors that Tanselle is there. They go from one performance to another, hoping to find her, but she seems to have vanished completely, almost as if their encounter was just a dream. The second season of the show will likely explore this search further, as it’s central to Dunk’s character – he’s searching for someone he can’t have, and Tanselle’s disappearance highlights that longing. What happened to Tanselle remains a mystery, and it’s generally believed she continued her travels with the puppet show, never seeing Dunk again.
The story couldn’t simply end with that unresolved thread, though. Tanselle became a recurring character throughout *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, appearing in many of the tales, which made her fate feel particularly important. It’s disappointing for readers to be left wondering what happened to her. While we know Dunk never married or had children, there’s still a possibility he could have met with Tanselle again and tried to make things work. However, that possibility worries fans, as any reunion could easily lead to something terrible happening to Tanselle, preventing them from finding happiness together.
George R. R. Martin Revealed That More Stories Could Be in Store
George R.R. Martin has hinted that the character Tanselle might reappear in future short stories about Dunk and Egg. He’s constantly working on new stories, and we might hear about a new one soon, possibly around the time his book, *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, is released. Martin clearly still thinks about Tanselle – just like Dunk does – so readers may eventually find out more about her story in print. Plus, with the upcoming TV show, fans will have another way to experience these characters and potentially get the answers they’re hoping for.
The new show, *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, will likely stick closely to the source material, unless it becomes incredibly popular and goes beyond the original stories. However, George R.R. Martin always works closely with the show’s creators to make sure everything stays true to his vision, and he would definitely have input on characters like Tanselle Too Tall – how she’s shown and where her storyline goes. TV shows often need to provide more concrete answers than books do, because fans immediately start discussing and predicting what will happen. This could be an opportunity to finally give Tanselle Too Tall the ending that viewers are hoping for.
As a huge fan of the Dunk and Egg stories, I’m really hoping *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* gives us a satisfying conclusion for Tanselle and Dunk. It would be heartbreakingly beautiful if they found each other again, even knowing Dunk is ultimately destined to be alone. Honestly, it would be even *worse* if they never reconnected at all, denying him any chance at happiness. This series has a real opportunity to right a wrong from the original tales. I’m desperate to see Tanselle make a clear decision about her future, even if that means choosing a life away from Dunk – knowing it’s the best path for her. More than anything, I need to *know* what happens to her, to see that she has a future, even without him.
Many books don’t fully explain what happens with that relationship, leaving Dunk unsatisfied. Hopefully, the series *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* will give us a more complete story about Tanselle over its three seasons.
