Kit Harington is genuinely terrifying in new horror movie The Beast Within (spoiler-free review)
As a long-time gamer and horror movie enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of werewolf stories that fail to live up to the hype. But “The Beast Within” is a breath of fresh air in this genre. The film’s setting in the English wilds instantly transported me back to my childhood, where I would spend hours immersed in RPG games with similar atmospheres.
In the depths of the English forests, a man concealing a troubling past tries to maintain a tranquil existence with his spouse and child. However, as is typical in horror tales, events soon take a turn for the worse. “The Beast Within” stands out as an intriguing new film that delves into its gothic elements. The primary draw for audiences, though, is Kit Harington of “Game of Thrones” fame. His portrayal in this movie is unlike anything we’ve seen from him before.
The summary and preview reveal that his character goes through a drastic change, which he and his wife (Ashleigh Cummings) have been keeping hidden from their daughter Willow (Caoilinn Springall, who gave an excellent performance in “Stopmotion”).
In a chilling turn, Kit Harington delivers an authentic scare in “The Beat Within.” This frightening portrayal is crucial to the movie as the werewolf aspects are largely concealed to heighten the tension. The terror and suspense primarily depend on Harington’s acting skills in his human guise. After watching this film, you will gain a newfound respect for his acting abilities.
We don’t encounter many werewolf stories nowadays. They’ve never reached the popularity levels of vampire tales. However, The Beast Within stands out with its introspective and emotional narrative, making it more than your average monster fantasy. The film holds several appealing elements without revealing major plot twists. Among these assets are the remarkable performances by Harington, Cummings, and Springall. Each actor delivers an exceptional portrayal in this captivating production.
Although “The Beast Within” may follow a foreseeable path at times, the compelling performances of the actors make it captivating to watch. They skillfully portray a family dealing with unending violence rooted in an ancient secret, making it worthwhile to overlook the minor shortcomings.
It’s quite intriguing that these two horror films, “The Beast Within” and “Starve Acre,” which were both released this week, complement each other in an unexpected way. Matt Smith, known for his role in “House of the Dragon,” stars in “Starve Acre.” While the former can be classified as folk horror, the latter leans more towards the dark realm of fairytales.
