Kit Harington gets candid about his MCU role: "If Marvel calls, you gotta do it”

As a seasoned gamer and avid MCU fan with over a decade of invested time, I find myself both frustrated and hopeful regarding the fate of Kit Harington’s character, Dane Whitman, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The tantalizing glimpse of potential in his storyline during Eternals has left me yearning for more, much like Jon Snow waiting for a white raven.

Following his stint on “Game of Thrones,” Kit Harington’s most thrilling role post-TV show has been portraying Dane Whitman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially, it was quite captivating, but after a single appearance in “Eternals” (2021) that hinted at more, no further developments have materialized as yet.

In the film “Eternals“, Dane Whitman, portrayed by Harington, had a relatively minor role throughout. He’s a historian working at London’s Natural History Museum and is romantically involved with Sersi. His family history is complex and shrouded in mystery, and he eventually acquires the ancient Ebony Blade, which carries the powers of the Black Knight.

It wasn’t until the final post-credits scene, where Mahershala Ali as Blade spoke, that it seemed his story was on the verge of expanding into something more significant within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, since the moment Whitman unsheathed the blade three years ago, Blade hasn’t made another appearance in the MCU. Typically, post-credit scenes hint at larger events to follow, but this time it didn’t.

In an interview with GQ, Harington shared his reasons for joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As it turns out, when Kevin Feige reaches out to you, it’s hard to resist. Harington admitted, “I won’t pretend I took that role because it was unique and intriguing. If Marvel calls, you simply have to accept.”

Kit Harington expressed his fondness for the character and is open to reprising the role if given a chance. Interestingly, the Black Knight wasn’t the only intriguing character hinted in the Eternals post-credit scene. The film also introduced Harry Styles as Starfox, Thanos’ brother and another character who appears to have taken a backseat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s possible that Dane Whitman and Starfox might show up in future team-up films such as “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. I’d not be surprised if Kit Harington reprises his role for the upcoming “Blade” project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe too. Here’s hoping they’ve got something lined up, at least.
