KISS icon Gene Simmons, 76, breaks silence after car crash sent him to the hospital

Gene Simmons, the famous member of the band KISS, has spoken out after being briefly hospitalized due to a car accident in Malibu. He’s letting fans know he’s doing well and has fully recovered.

The 76-year-old actor lost consciousness while driving on Pacific Coast Highway on Tuesday and crashed into a parked car. He was briefly hospitalized but has already been discharged.

Simmons used X to express gratitude for the supportive messages he received and playfully admitted to being a bad driver.

He shared on Wednesday that he’s doing okay after a minor car accident. He joked that it happens, especially to drivers like him, and assured everyone that everything is alright.

Earlier that day, NBC4 LA reported that Simmons had driven his Lincoln Navigator into a parked car after seemingly losing consciousness behind the wheel.

The rock legend has since told the news outlet he is doing fine.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Simmons told deputies he lost consciousness before the crash.

According to reports, Gene Simmons is recovering at home after collapsing during an incident, as shared by his wife, Shannon Tweed, age 68.

She said her spouse’s vehicle had careened across a few lanes of traffic during the accident.

Tweed mentioned that Simmons recently had a change in his medication, and his doctor now recommends he drink more water, though he doesn’t really like it.

In 2023, Simmons grabbed headlines when he became dehydrated while performing with KISS in Manaus, Brazil.

The rocker became ill on stage, prompting the band to pause the show.

Simmons let fans know he was feeling alright in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He explained that he felt weak during a match at Manaus Stadium in Brazil due to dehydration. They paused the game for about five minutes while he rehydrated, and he quickly recovered. He assured everyone it wasn’t a serious issue and said he looks forward to seeing them at the next match in Bogota.

He later explained that everything was alright, and he appreciated everyone’s well wishes. They had played a show in a very humid and hot venue – he described it as like being in the Amazon jungle in Brazil. He got dehydrated during the performance and had to rest for one song, but they were back on stage and finished the show within five minutes.

Simmons has a heart condition called atrial fibrillation, but he says he’s able to manage it by getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated.

He recalled first learning about his condition, known as AFib, during an appearance on The Doctors in 2016. He said he’d never heard of it before, but about ten years prior, while on tour, he experienced a rapid heartbeat. He explained it happened when the stage temperature soared due to the lights, and then imitated the sound of his racing heart.

I began to feel dizzy, sweaty, and couldn’t catch my breath, so I called a doctor. He came and explained I had something called atrial fibrillation, or AFib, and went over all the details. It was a lot of information to process, he said.

Ever since that scare, things have been mostly good! I make sure I get tons of sleep and stay super hydrated. But honestly? Am I likely to have another episode of AFib? Absolutely. It’s just… part of me, I guess.

Since leaving KISS in 2023 after their final tour, Simmons has been performing with his own band.

He was a founding member of KISS, playing bass and sharing lead vocals from 1973 until the band stopped performing two years ago.

Gene Simmons joined Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss to form the metal band in New York City in the early 1970s.

Throughout their 50 years as a band, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley played alongside Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer for many years as well.

Gene Simmons recently finished a tour with his band, Gene Simmons Band, with their last show taking place in Sturgis, South Dakota on August 3rd.

He’s set to perform without his usual makeup next month in Las Vegas, joining fellow KISS members Paul Stanley and Tommy Thayer for the Kiss Kruise event.
