A new trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is out, and it seems King Kong is once again asserting his dominance over Godzilla. Season 2 of the show will debut on Apple TV on February 27, 2026, and the trailer confirms the return of both Kong and Kurt Russell.
The TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, part of the Monsterverse, takes place between the events of Kong: Skull Island and right before Godzilla vs. Kong. The first season focused on Godzilla, but it looks like Kong will be the main monster featured in season two.
Kong Is Taking Over As The Star Of Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Season 2
The trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 indicates that King Kong will take center stage this season. However, a Godzilla roar at the end hints he won’t be absent for long. Kong has been featured more prominently in the Monsterverse lately.
In both Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong, King Kong takes center stage as the main character. While Godzilla still appears frequently, the story focuses more on Kong’s emotional journey. Now, it looks like Kong will be the star of the new series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as he’s prominently featured in the trailer.
The Monsterverse started with Godzilla, and it was a major win for Legendary Pictures to secure the rights from Toho Co., who are usually very protective of their properties. However, King Kong has unexpectedly become the more recognizable star of the series. His role should also clarify some long-standing questions about Kong’s story in the films.
What Kong’s Story Will Be In Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters
Although the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters doesn’t reveal much about Kong’s plans for season 2, we can make some educated guesses based on the season finale and the existing films. The close-up shots of Kong in Monarch suggest he’s not pleased with the current situation.
The first season of Monarch concludes with the Apex team returning from the Hollow Earth and arriving on Skull Island, where they reunite with other research groups. Just as they begin to regroup and plan their departure, Kong unexpectedly appears, bursting through the trees and beating his chest in a display of power.
It’s hard to say exactly when Monarch: Legacy of Monsters begins in relation to the events we’ve already seen, but it’s clear this Kong is much wilder and more animalistic than the one we saw battling Mechagodzilla a few years down the line. Remember, by the time Kong vs. Godzilla rolled around, Kong was already in captivity. So, I’m guessing this series will fill in the blanks and show us how Monarch actually managed to capture him.
