King Charles shares touching memory of Queen Elizabeth II in new documentary
As a gamer with a penchant for royal history and a soft spot for nostalgia, I find the upcoming documentary “Coronation Girls” intriguing. The story of King Charles reminiscing about his mother’s preparations for her coronation, especially the anecdote about her practicing while he took baths, adds a personal touch that humanizes the royal family.
As I sit here, controller in hand, the end of the year has me reminiscing like a boss level in my favorite game. It seems even the King of the United Kingdom is feeling the same vibe, as evidenced by his recent heartfelt words about his mom, Queen Elizabeth II, in a fresh docuseries titled Coronation Girls. This intriguing series features moments where our monarch shares stories of how his mom used to practice wearing St. Edward’s Crown while I splashed around during bath time as a kid.
As reported by BBC, King Charles mentioned that his mother was apprehensive about potential blunders while donning the 4.9 pound (2.23 kilogram) art piece, the St. Edward’s Crown, during her coronation ceremony. In contrast to the Imperial State Crown worn on other public occasions, King Charles explained that the St. Edward’s Crown is both taller and heavier. As a result, Queen Elizabeth had to carefully prepare herself by learning proper posture and walking techniques to handle the hefty adornment prior to her coronation day.
More memories about the former matriarch of the Royal Family
After Coronation Girls is broadcasted, King Charles will have made several public statements about his mother this year. In October, Tea and Banter discussed his comments regarding the Queen’s final days at Balmoral Castle during a public address. The King mentioned that his mother wished to spend her last moments in the Scottish castle and passed away peacefully towards the end of her life. Apart from this speech, there aren’t many occasions where King Charles has publicly addressed his mother and her legacy.
A fascinating detail about King Charles’ involvement in “Coronation Girls” is that he actually made those comments in the year 2023, as reported by BBC. It was revealed that the King filmed scenes for the documentary back in December of the previous year. This implies that he shared a heartwarming anecdote about his mother’s apprehension more than a year after her passing.
According to BBC, the focus of the series “Coronation Girls” is on the remarkable tale of 50 Canadian women who were given the opportunity to attend Queen Elizabeth’s coronation thanks to a businessman named Garfield Weston. Before this, these girls had never ventured beyond their hometowns. With financial contributions, they embarked on journeys by train and sea, reaching England in 1953 for this historic event.
The documentary will last for 90 minutes, featuring insights from 12 women who are still alive and were originally part of the Canadian group. As per BBC reports, these women visited London during the recent winter season to tour Buckingham Palace as grown-ups. However, their palace tour was unexpectedly halted when King Charles III extended a surprising invitation for them to have tea with the monarch.
Douglas Arrowsmith’s documentary will air December 26th on WNED PBS in Canada.
