Kim Wilde’s not-so-wild life at 64: Kids In America hitmaker adopts healthy diet, is a trained horticulturist and enjoys cold water plunges in far cry from her naked rock star days

Kim Wilde, who once traveled globally alongside Michael Jackson and David Bowie in a lifestyle filled with indulgence, now leads a more settled life as she reaches the age of 64.

Instead of her wild, rock-star lifestyle filled with partying and alcohol, the artist famous for “Kids In America” now embraces a different path, opting for a life focused on gardening, wholesome nutrition, and icy dips instead.

In a conversation with The Sunday Times, Kim reflected on how dramatically different her life is now compared to when she was a globetrotting rockstar.

Years ago, Kim studied horticulture at Capel Manor College in Enfield with the intention of creating gardens for her children. Later, she was asked by Channel 4 to serve as a designer for their show Better Gardens due to her celebrity status. She expressed that after winter, she is eager for light and can usually be found exploring her garden before 7am so as not to miss any signs of life returning.

Lately, I’ve found myself drawn to the invigorating experience of cold plunges, having set up my very own in the tranquil haven of my meticulously tended garden, complete with a personal swimming pool.

One significant shift in Kim’s lifestyle is her eating habits; she no longer relies on fast food or alcohol. For over a decade now, she has chosen a healthier dietary path.

She has welcomed in a breakfast of scrambled eggs and spinach with a side of nuts and fruit.

Lunch typically includes items such as hummus, fresh fruit, veggies, cheese, and sometimes Marks & Spencer’s sourdough bread.

Discussing her habit of taking cold showers, Kim mentioned, “Many people comment on how youthful I appear; however, it’s merely an illusion. In reality, I take a dip in the chilly pool in my garden daily, alongside my friend Sue.

Instead of her wild party nights during her tours in the eighties and nineties, that kind of post-concert indulgence is no longer part of her lifestyle now.

Or,

During her concert tours in the 80s and 90s, there was a lot of partying after the shows, but those days of excessive fun have come to an end for her now.

Nevertheless, she shared one of her most outrageous tales from her travels, stating: “On one occasion, I found myself bare in a hotel hallway following a lively party: I stealthily left my room under cover of darkness, but the door closed upon me.

‘I had to slink down to the lobby to ask for a spare key, which was mortifying.’

Kim’s professional path has been an exciting adventure spanning the realms of music, television, and horticulture, characterized by continuous transformation and persistent fame.

Her first hit single, “Kids In America,” which also serves as her international anthem, was created by her brother Ricky and her father, a renowned original British rock ‘n’ roll artist named Marty Wilde.

It became a defining anthem of the ’80s and at one stage she was shifting 60,000 copies a day.

Although she amassed seven additional Top Ten hits in the UK, she never reached the coveted position of having a number one single. However, her rendition of the Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” managed to take the top spot on the US Billboard chart in 1986.

In these very moments, I found myself captivated by the unveiling of Kim Wilde’s self-titled debut album, a milestone that resonated deeply within me. This masterpiece bore timeless classics such as Chequered Love, catapulting her into the realm of a fresh pop phenomenon.

Subsequently, she put out numerous albums that enjoyed further fame following the release of “Another Step,” one of them containing the worldwide smash hit “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” This version of the Supremes’ timeless tune reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 1987, Michael Jackson asked Kim to accompany him on his Bad tour, which included performing in 33 shows spread across Europe and the United Kingdom. During this time, she noticed that he was a solo star lost in his own cosmos.

After a two-year hiatus following her tour, her life took a dramatic turn one day after her thirty-first birthday, as she realized that her reign as a popular pop icon could potentially be ending.

Following some time spent tending to her personal affairs, Kim shifted her attention to television work, ultimately gaining popularity as a well-known presenter and figure in the United Kingdom.

And in 2000, she discovered a passion for gardening and authored several books.

Apart from that, she started appearing frequently as a host on gardening programs, sharing her expertise and passion with a fresh group of viewers while engaging with her longtime dedicated followers in an innovative manner.

2006 saw her comeback in the music scene with the album “Never Say Never,” a collection that included refreshed renditions of her timeless tunes as well as fresh compositions.

This marked a resurgence in her musical career.

In the year 2021, she published Pop Don’t Stop: Greatest Hits, an extensive compilation of her most popular songs spanning over four decades, honoring her long and successful career in the music industry.

Over the course of her professional journey, Kim has consistently been an adored icon in popular culture, recognized for her one-of-a-kind voice, fashion sense, and knack for embracing changing fads while preserving her individual essence.

In 2022 she revealed she split from and subsequently divorced her husband Hal Fowler in 2021.

In 1996, the singer tied the knot with Hal, a 56-year-old writer and actor, whom they had initially crossed paths with during their roles in the rock opera “Tommy.

In just half a year after their first encounter, they decided to tie the knot and subsequently welcomed two kids into their family. At present, their son, Harry, is 24 years old, while their daughter, Rose, is 22.

On Kim Wilde’s Twitter, a joint announcement was made stating that she and Hal Fowler parted ways peacefully through an agreement last year and have since finalized their divorce.

‘They have no outside interference, and they maintain a friendly relationship. Each one hopes for the best as they move forward separately, and there will be no additional comments or declarations.’
