Kim Kardashian’s daughter North West, 12, makes Instagram debut after dad Kanye wanted kids off social media

On Friday, Kim Kardashian’s daughter, North West, officially joined Instagram with her own account.

The 12-year-old nepobaby shared a stylishly blurry photo of herself to kick off the new account.

I’ve been following North’s account for a while now, and while the bio says it’s run by her parents, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster! Her dad, Kanye, has publicly voiced his frustrations about her being on social media, even though her mom, Kim, is the one overseeing things. It’s definitely an interesting family dynamic playing out online!

A video from 2022 resurfaced in October showing Kanye West explaining he’d told Kim Kardashian he didn’t want their children on social media, and specifically, he wouldn’t let his daughter use TikTok.

I was so excited to see North’s first post! She looked amazing in a black Balenciaga jersey – the ’01’ one, with short sleeves – paired with a cute black ribbed miniskirt. It was such a cool outfit!

She finished her look with several necklaces and bracelets, and striking black boots adorned with silver chains around her legs.

In the photo, North gave two peace signs and looked away with a neutral expression. The image has a blurry, doubled effect, likely because the camera was moving when the picture was taken.

Her profile states her parents oversee it, but it’s uncertain how involved her father will be with her posts. He’s historically been much more against his kids using social media than Kim is.

The disagreement flared up again in October when North West surprised her followers by posting videos on TikTok. The videos, shared from an account she shares with her mother, showed North with temporary face tattoos, a fake nose piercing, and gold teeth coverings (grillz).

She completed her bold style with long, blue braids and blue contact lenses. A tooth-covering grill, painted black, added to the striking, and somewhat unsettling, effect.

I was so surprised to see North experimenting with her look! She added a fake nose ring and even drew on some temporary tattoos – a little heart under one eye and what looked like her signature under the other. It was such a creative and playful thing to do, and totally her style.

People had different reactions, with some believing North West’s edgy look was just a Halloween outfit. Others felt it wasn’t okay for her to be pictured with fake tattoos and piercings.

A video of Kanye West expressing concerns about his children, originally recorded in March 2022, began circulating online around that time.

In a video clip, the rapper explained they had just spoken with Kim and asked her to stop provoking them with issues related to TikTok.

Kanye stated firmly, “I won’t let this happen again.” As her father, he explained that he understands many people don’t value fathers or the importance of family, and the media often pushes a different agenda. However, he’s determined to protect his daughter and won’t allow her to be exploited on TikTok.

The rapper initially reacted angrily to a TikTok video posted by Kim Kardashian and their daughter, North. In the video, eight-year-old North lip-synced to Machine Gun Kelly’s song “Emo Girl” while wearing dark makeup, including black lipstick and smudged eyeshadow.

A month before this, Kanye posted on Instagram that his daughter was appearing on TikTok without his permission.

Hours after his video went live, Kim hit back on her own Instagram.

She strongly criticized her ex-husband for repeatedly attacking her, claiming his actions had caused significant pain to their family. In a detailed statement, she also emphasized that she had been the primary caretaker for their children.

Kim expressed that Kanye’s repeated public criticisms of her, through interviews and social media, are more upsetting than anything their daughter North could do on TikTok.

‘As the parent who is the main provider and caregiver for our children, I am doing my best to protect our daughter while also allowing her to express her creativity in the medium that she wishes with adult supervision — because it brings her happiness,’ she wrote.

A video of Kanye West from 2022 has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), racking up over five million views. It resurfaced in October following a controversial TikTok post by his daughter, North, and has since ignited a lot of discussion.

Many people responding to the post criticized West, particularly referencing his wife Bianca Censori and her frequently revealing outfits, which often attract media attention.

One person called it insane and hypocritical that Kanye West is seemingly influencing Bianca Censori to walk around naked while simultaneously expressing concerns about his own daughter.

‘Then lead by example by putting some clothes on your wife, Ye,’ another added. 

Someone questioned how genuine his concern could be, pointing out that he publicly displays his wife in a state of undress and asking if he hadn’t considered the impact on his daughter.

One Twitter user pointed out the irony of Kanye West criticizing his daughter North’s TikTok use, considering his own often outlandish fashion sense is far more attention-grabbing.

One person pointed out the hypocrisy of a man concerned about his daughter’s Halloween costume while allegedly exposing his wife. They questioned if he feared others would treat his daughter the same way he treats his wife.

Others, however, agreed with him.

 

Someone commented that Kanye West was actually right to be concerned about the impact of fame and social media on his daughter, predicting it would mold her into someone the public wanted her to be, rather than allowing her to develop her true self. They pointed out that he was labeled as ‘crazy’ for voicing these concerns.

It’s ironic that she’s now famous for the very things he tried to shield her from. This isn’t about her appearance – it’s about a society that values getting noticed more than being authentic.

Kanye wasn’t attempting to dominate her; he was trying to protect her from the harmful aspects of the internet and those who exploit youth. People dismissed his concerns at the time, but they shouldn’t be so quick to do so now.

It feels like the internet is repeating itself, and now people are acting surprised by Kanye’s comments, even though they criticized him years ago for raising similar concerns about his daughter’s online presence. It’s a case of history repeating itself, with the same people changing their tune.
