Kim Kardashian is now sharing details about the drama that happened behind the scenes during her 2022 Met Gala appearance, when she wore Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress.
The 45-year-old reality star turned heads at the New York fashion event by wearing a famous dress previously worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962. Monroe wore the gown when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! Kim just said she actually regrets going blonde! Can you even imagine?! She says now she wishes she’d kept her dark hair and tried to look more like Jackie Kennedy. Like, seriously, Jackie O! I always thought she’d pull off anything, but she’s saying she misses her brunette days. It’s just… everything makes so much more sense now!
Okay, so on the new episode of The Kardashians, Kim was talking about the Marilyn dress, and honestly, it’s still bothering her! She said she’ll be bringing it up forever, which, same! Apparently, everyone kept telling her not to go with the Marilyn hair look because they were worried she’d end up looking like one of those creepy Marilyn Monroe wax figures. Can you believe it? It’s just…everyone was so concerned about her looking fake! She’s so obsessed with getting it right, and I totally get it! It’s just…the Marilyn hair! It’s iconic, and she pulled it off, despite what everyone said!
We were just going for a blonde look at the time. Looking back, I wish I’d gone with a more classic, dark-haired style like Jackie Kennedy Onassis. I actually spent a lot of time editing photos afterward, trying out different looks.
Kim confessed she jokingly blamed her hairstylist, Chris Appleton, for her decision to go blonde for the red carpet, saying she ‘tortured’ him with complaints.
The gown itself, owned by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!, posed its own nightmare.
Kim had previously shared that getting into the dress was difficult, so she actually changed into it at the gala to prevent it from getting damaged while traveling.
She explained that she couldn’t bring herself to ride in a car, as she felt it was too delicate and she didn’t want anyone to touch her. She was worried someone might get oil on her dress, and she didn’t want to take that risk when leaving the hotel.
Everything – the weight loss, the thirty-hour hair dye process, leaving the hotel in a robe, arriving, changing clothes, walking the red carpet, and then changing again into a backup dress because we didn’t want to risk damaging the original while eating – it’s all for maybe ten minutes of being on the red carpet. That’s really all there is to it.
Kim meticulously focused on every small detail, staying up all night to perfect her hair and worrying about potential damage from the dye.
The color absolutely has to be perfect, and I can’t risk damaging my hair. We really need to get this done correctly, because we only have one day to dye it, and it’s going to take about fifteen hours.
She also admitted the weight-loss pressure to fit the dress:
Let me tell you, when I decided I wanted to wear Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress, I understood just how delicate and valuable it was. Honestly, it was a real motivator! I knew I needed to lose at least ten pounds just to even be able to attempt to get into it.
Marilyn Monroe’s famous, sparkling dress, created by designer Jean Louis, has been a popular exhibit at the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Museum in Orlando since it was bought for $4.81 million at a Julien’s Auction.
Marilyn Monroe initially purchased the dress for only $1,440. It has since become one of the highest-priced dresses ever sold at auction.
The story goes that Marilyn Monroe’s dress for her famous ‘Happy Birthday’ performance was so tight, she had to be sewn into it – and Kim Kardashian recently experienced similar problems with her own outfit.
She felt out of place in the extravagant, vintage gown, discreetly covering herself with a white shawl as she walked up the steps of the Met Gala.
Kim Kardashian finally found a duplicate dress that fit her perfectly, allowing her to enjoy the Met Gala with her family and boyfriend Pete Davidson. The struggle to find the right outfit has now become a famous story from the event.
