Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner hit a snag on Monday in their attempt to keep the details of a settlement with Ray J private. The settlement relates to the infamous sex tape featuring a reality TV star.
Let’s talk about Kim Kardashian. Back in 2002, when she was 22 and celebrating her birthday in Cabo San Lucas with her then-boyfriend, some private moments were captured. Years later, in 2007, those moments became public through a DVD released by Vivid Entertainment – it was a pretty big deal at the time and definitely put her name out there. It’s a part of her story that’s been widely discussed, and it’s interesting to look back at how things have changed in the world of celebrity and privacy.
The release of the tape made the Kardashian family famous, but it also caused legal problems for Kim Kardashian and Ray J, her ex-partner. They reached a settlement in 2023, reportedly worth about $6 million.
A Los Angeles court has rejected requests from Kim Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, to seal certain documents, though it will allow them to redact a bank account number found in some of the exhibits, according to a ruling reviewed by the Daily Mail.
Earlier in March, Kardashian and Jenner requested that certain documents remain private, arguing that making them public would significantly harm their family’s privacy and discourage future settlement agreements.
In his ruling, Judge Steven A. Ellis made it clear the case wasn’t focused on any alleged sexual activity involving Kardashian, as both sides agreed the recordings had already been made public.
The real question is whether the agreement reached by both sides in 2023—and any related documents detailing its terms—should remain confidential and protected from public view.
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Kardashian, Jenner, and Ray J for more information about this story, but they haven’t received a response yet.
The court ruled that Kardashian and Jenner haven’t provided any proof that making their settlement agreement public would cause them damage.
The court rejected the reality stars’ request to keep details secret, finding their initial arguments were too unclear, based on guesses, poorly defined, and lacked sufficient evidence.
The ruling followed statements made in court by the mother and daughter, where they refuted Ray J’s claim that they intentionally leaked the footage to gain publicity, calling it false.
Kardashian stated in March that Ray J’s accusation – that she and her mother schemed to release a sex tape, trick the public, and file a false lawsuit against the company that released it for publicity – is false.
Jenner stated in legal documents that Ray J’s claims she was behind the creation and release of the sex tape, titled ‘Kim Kardashian, Superstar,’ are completely untrue.
She stated that she did not create or arrange any sexually explicit videos featuring her daughter.
Jenner stated that claims linking her to the tape were completely false, deeply hurtful, and have bothered her for many years.
Jenner stated she never asked her daughter to participate in making or releasing a sex tape, despite Ray J’s claims. She firmly denied any involvement in the distribution of such a tape, emphasizing she would never do anything that could harm her daughter in that way.
As someone who understands the importance of protecting your personal brand and mental health, let me tell you, dealing with false narratives can be incredibly costly. In my own experience, I’ve had to spend significant resources to correct misinformation and safeguard my reputation, and frankly, just to take care of myself through it all. It’s a challenging situation, but prioritizing well-being is key.
Kardashian stated that her expenses covered things like therapy, plus help from communications, legal, and strategic advisors.
Jenner stated in legal documents that she incurred expenses for therapy and public relations services due to comments made by Ray J about her and her family.
Kim Kardashian stated that Ray J was bringing up old and previously debunked claims. These claims originally surfaced in a 2008 legal dispute between her family and Ray J’s mother, Sonja Norwood.
Okay, so Ray J… he’s Brandy’s brother, obviously, but honestly, he’s SO much more than that! Everyone thinks of the Kardashians when they hear his name, and for good reason. He was a huge part of how they blew up back in the mid-2000s, thanks to… well, the tape. It was filmed way back in 2003, can you believe it? It feels like yesterday, but it totally changed everything for them. I’ve been following this whole story forever, and honestly, Ray J doesn’t get enough credit!
He supposedly wrote the song ‘I Hit It First’ in 2016 as a way to publicly address his past relationship with her and criticize her husband, Kanye West.
He’s appeared on reality TV shows like For the Love of Ray J, Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business, and Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood.
These legal documents appear roughly five months after a mother and daughter first sued Ray J in October. He responded by filing his own lawsuit, claiming they broke the terms of a $6 million agreement they had made regarding the tape.
