The lead vocalist of Killing Heidi, Ella Hooper, has at last disclosed the unexpected backstory that gave rise to her group’s unique and unconventional name.
On a Friday evening, the 42-year-old vocalist graced The Project stage alongside her bandmate brother Jesse, sharing insights on the thought process behind picking their band’s unique name.
’25 years on, who is Heidi and how is she still alive?’ co-host Rove McManus asked.
Ella playfully said, “She never comes up in conversation!” Then, Jesse chimed in, “We didn’t have a specific Heidi in mind. It was the contrast between those words that caught our attention.
‘But poor old Heidi’s out there. Nothing personal to Heidi, we love you all!’
Ella added the band name had caused some conflict when she was at high school.

In response, she clarified, “Were some people named Heidi being referred to? Not at all! It’s merely a name.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the siblings and I are preparing to set sail on an imminent Australian tour, marking the 25-year milestone of our beloved number one album, Reflector.
‘We are hitting the road to play the whole album and a few other fan favourites,’ Jesse said.
Ella mentioned that the tour was going to be incredibly thrilling since they planned on playing the whole album in sequence, which they hadn’t attempted previously!
The siblings will kick off their anniversary tour on Friday, June 20 at The Gov in Adelaide.
They will then head to Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
In 1999, the band Killing Heidi, consisting of sisters Ella and Jesse along with friends Aaron Hart (drums) and Rowen Murphy (bass), conquered the Australian music charts with their smash hit single “Mascara” off their first studio album.
In the subsequent years, the band accumulated even greater success with their subsequent tracks “Superman/Supergirl” and “Weir,” earning them a total of four ARIA Awards in 2000, among which were “Album of the Year” and “Best Group.

Afterward, the group put out three studio albums: Reflector (released in 2000), Present (in 2002), and Killing Heidi (which came out in 2004).
The group hailing from Violet Town, Victoria, disbanded back in 2006, only to reunite again in 2016, following a decade apart.
Ella advanced to perform independently in her musical career and faced off against nine other artists to represent Australia individually at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest, singing her song titled Data Dust.
Unfortunately for Ella, Kate Miller-Heidke ended up winning the competition.
Currently, she serves as the presenter for a retro ’90s music-themed podcast titled “Front & Centre”. You can tune in to this show on the Triple M 90’s radio station and also through the LiSTNR mobile application.
