The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga made Thanos seem like Marvel’s most frightening villain. However, a truly terrifying villain actually comes from a lesser-known TV series. Now, the MCU includes both movies and TV shows, all building on and connecting to the established universe.
Before all the Disney+ shows, Marvel actually experimented with grittier stories over on Netflix, and those shows are now officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Honestly, one of the most overlooked gems from that run is Jessica Jones. And let me tell you, it features what I think is Marvel’s most genuinely frightening villain ever: David Tennant as Kilgrave. He’s seriously unsettling.
Jessica Jones’ Kilgrave Is Marvel’s Most Terrifying Live-Action Villain

I still remember when Netflix started releasing its Marvel shows back in 2015 with Daredevil. It wasn’t long after that, just a couple of months, when Jessica Jones came out. I was really excited for that one! It was created by Melissa Rosenberg and starred Krysten Ritter as Jessica, a former superhero who’d decided to become a private investigator. But it quickly became clear Jessica was dealing with a lot of past issues, and she was struggling with alcohol as a result of everything she’d been through.
Jessica Jones gave up being a superhero after her then-boyfriend, Kilgrave, manipulated her into committing a murder. When Kilgrave reappears, Jessica is driven to destroy him once and for all. Kilgrave gained his powers as a child through dangerous experiments.
Kilgrave has the power to control people’s minds, and he uses it selfishly and for harmful purposes. He became fixated on Jessica Jones and held her captive, falsely presenting it as a relationship. Although Jessica eventually escaped his control, the ordeal caused her lasting trauma and significant emotional distress.
Kilgrave didn’t just harm Jessica; he consistently used his powers to control people, forcing them to do everything from simply keeping him company to committing terrible acts, even suicide. Unlike Thanos, who had a grand scheme, Kilgrave was motivated purely by a desire for power.
Kilgrave’s Horrors Are Rooted In Reality

Kilgrave is a truly frightening villain because his powers aren’t abstract – they tap into very real fears. He can control anyone, forcing them to obey his every command. This control also allows him to maintain close, yet deeply disturbing, relationships with people, like his long manipulation of Jessica.
Kilgrave’s abilities and behavior mirror those of an abusive and controlling partner. He doesn’t need any emotional connection to manipulate people and force them to obey him. This control leaves a deep and lasting impact on his victims, as demonstrated in the show by Jessica’s continued struggle to overcome his influence even after he’s gone.
Jessica continued to be haunted by memories of Kilgrave, who appeared in her dreams and as voices in her head. This is what makes Kilgrave such a terrifying villain for many – he feels like someone you could actually meet, unlike more fantastical threats like Thanos.
Kilgrave Is One Of David Tennant’s Best Performances – And His Scariest One

David Tennant’s portrayal of Kilgrave is a major reason the character was so memorable and frightening. While Tennant was already well-known for his work in shows like Doctor Who and Broadchurch, those roles were quite different from Kilgrave. He’d demonstrated his acting ability before, but his performance as Kilgrave truly surprised audiences.
David Tennant skillfully blended charm with a sinister edge, a quality he used to make Kilgrave incredibly manipulative and controlling. While Tennant’s Doctor certainly had his darker side, Kilgrave was purely villainous, lacking any positive traits.
Now that Jessica Jones is back and officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans are wondering if her former tormentor, Kilgrave, might reappear – perhaps in a dream, hallucination, or as part of a flashback.
