Kiefer Sutherland recalls Rob Reiner’s bold move directing Jack Nicholson’s iconic scene in A Few Good Men

Kiefer Sutherland recently shared a remarkable story about an experience on the set of ‘A Few Good Men,’ involving Jack Nicholson and director Rob Reiner.

In the upcoming CBS News special, Rob Reiner – Scenes from a Life, Donald Sutherland recounts the day they filmed the famous courtroom scene from the 1992 film where his character, Colonel Nathan R. Jessup, shouts, ‘You can’t handle the truth!’

Jack Nicholson says the famous line to Tom Cruise’s character, Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, during a dramatic scene in the courtroom. Demi Moore also appears in the scene as Lieutenant Commander JoAnne Galloway.

According to CBS News, Jack Nicholson performed the entire scene in a single, impressive take, as Sutherland, 58, described to the network. People magazine also reported on this.

During a special broadcast on December 21st, Sutherland recounted a silent moment where he approached Jack Nicholson and quietly asked if he’d be interested in doing another take. Nicholson simply replied, ‘Well, we’re here,’ according to Sutherland.

Sutherland praised his director, saying their latest work was just as impressive. This comes as more unsettling information surfaces about Rob and Michele’s last moments.

Reiner loved how the scene turned out so much that he surprised everyone by letting the cast and crew finish up early, despite originally planning to film all day.

The actor remembered that after they finished filming, Rob told everyone, “I’m so happy with how things went, you can all go home for the day.” The actor had previously gained recognition for his role in director Reiner’s 1986 film, Stand by Me, which helped launch his career.

This special honors the life and career of Rob Reiner, with heartfelt new interviews from Albert Brooks, Annette Bening, Kathy Bates, Michael Douglas, Jerry O’Connell, and Mandy Patinkin.

The well-known director and his wife, Michele, were found stabbed to death at their home in Los Angeles on December 14th.

Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with the first-degree murder of both parents. He appeared in court on December 17th, wearing a suicide-prevention smock and restrained with handcuffs and leg irons, and is scheduled to be formally charged on January 7th.

According to People magazine, Nick is in solitary confinement at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles. He is being monitored for suicidal thoughts and is required to wear a special outfit designed to prevent self-harm at all times.

The killings happened shortly after the director and his wife went to Conan O’Brien’s holiday party on Saturday, December 13th, along with Nick.

The Reiners have another son, Jake, 34, and a daughter, Romy, 28.

According to The New York Post, Romy found her parents murdered in their Brentwood mansion. Both were found in bed with their throats cut and multiple stab wounds.

Jake and Romy shared a statement with People magazine expressing their deep sorrow and grief after the loss of their parents.

Losing our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, has been incredibly painful, and it’s something we wouldn’t wish on anyone. They were more than just parents to us—they were our closest friends, the siblings said.

We deeply appreciate the incredible support, sympathy, and kindness we’ve received from so many people – not just our loved ones, but from everyone in the community.

Rob Reiner directed many popular and critically acclaimed films spanning various genres.
