Kevin Spacey says Guy Pearce is ‘not a victim’ after Pearce says he was ‘targeted’ by Spacey
Approximately three decades later, it seems that Guy Pearce has come to terms with his on-set encounters with Kevin Spacey during “L.A. Confidential.” However, Spacey appears unwilling to acknowledge this situation, despite Pearce’s earlier statements about addressing feelings of discomfort caused by Spacey at the time of the incident.
Mature up, Guy Pearce. Stop portraying yourself as a victim,” was written by the two-time Oscar winner on X platform, where they also shared a video addressing Pearce’s responses to a direct question during a recent podcast.
Kevin instilled fear in me because he’s not only aggressive but also incredibly talented and charismatic. He’s truly impressive and commands a room with his presence. However, at the time, I was naive and easily influenced, and he took advantage of that fact.” – This is how Pearce explained on the Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast, which was published on Saturday.
Pearce appeared on the podcast due to his nomination as a supporting actor for the 2024 film “The Brutalist,” which earned ten Oscar nominations, among them one for best picture. Additionally, he was nominated for Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Critics Choice awards for the same role.

As a devoted admirer, I’m singing the praises of the seasoned performer, renowned for his stellar roles in “Memento,” “L.A. Confidential,” and HBO’s “Mildred Pierce.” His latest role as an intriguing industrialist has been garnering acclaim for its depth and complexity.
As a movie enthusiast, in an interview for my podcast, I emphasized that I prefer not to label myself as a “victim” because while there may have been elements of victimhood, I was nowhere near being a full-blown one compared to others who’ve suffered at the hands of sexual predators.
However, he claimed that after receiving unwanted attention from Spacey, he would dismiss it by saying something like, “Oh, that’s nothing. No, that’s nothing,” and continued to do so for about five months. This went on until production finished in August 1996.
As a movie enthusiast, I received a message from Spacey in our recent video chat on Tuesday, stating that he “would’ve much rather kept this private, but it seems you have your reasons for making it public.” Indeed, the media has been probing me about his comments, which Pearce first made on an Australian talk show back in 2018.
In his video, the 65-year-old actor responded by saying, “Are you truly curious about my response? Then it’s time for you to mature.” He also questioned if you had shared with the media that a year after filming ‘L.A. Confidential,’ you traveled to Savannah, Georgia while I was shooting ‘Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’ specifically to spend time with me? You mentioned this to the press, right? Or does it not align with the image of being a victim that you are portraying?
On Tuesday, a spokesperson for Pearce didn’t promptly provide The Times with a comment regarding Spacey’s statements, when asked.

Jurors have found Kevin Spacey not guilty in a sexual assault case in London.
In his video, Spacey humorously expressed regret for not picking up on the fact that you prefer not to spend time with him. He gestured with some light-hearted sarcasm by raising his hands.
Perhaps there was another motive at play, I can’t say for certain. Yet it seems strange to me that you would have stringed me along all this time, isn’t that so? But now, 28 years later, here you are on a mission. All this, after I’ve faced numerous hardships, and now you show up just in the nick of time to thwart the villain. Could it be that’s what’s happening here? What kept you from acting sooner? Did your horse tire out?
Later, Spacey suggested discussing the matter with Pearce at their convenience, stating that they could talk “anytime, anywhere.” He even proposed doing it right there, live on X, if preferred. Spacey assured him that he had nothing to hide. However, he added frankly, “Guy, it’s time you grew up. You are not a victim.
Back in 1996, at the tender age of 28, I found myself immersed in the making of the critically acclaimed film “L.A. Confidential,” where I shared the screen with the talented Russell Crowe and James Cromwell. Although we didn’t take home the Best Picture award that year, going to Titanic instead, we did receive recognition for our supporting actress (Kim Basinger) and adapted screenplay.

For the first time, a renowned entertainer who has won two Academy Awards and is celebrated across film, stage, and television announces openly that he identifies as gay.
According to Pearce, he recalled telling his former partner Kate Mestitz (an Australian actor) that the only instance when he felt secure on set was when Simon Baker, the actor from “The Mentalist,” was present. He added this was due to him being quickly discarded like a hot potato and Baker paying more attention to Simon because he was ten times more attractive than Pearce ever was. It’s important to note that Baker had a smaller role in “L.A. Confidential” compared to Pearce’s Det. Lt. Ed Exley character.
In 2017, when stories about Kevin Spacey’s inappropriate conduct became common knowledge, Pearce shared his experiences with the actor. On a podcast, he stated that he was fortunate enough to be an adult at the time when these alleged incidents involving him occurred, unlike Anthony Rapp who claimed to be 14 years old during the incident where Spacey, then 26, allegedly made sexual advances towards him by climbing onto him.
A civil jury in 2022 found that Spacey had not molested Rapp.
In fall 2017 is when Pearce first encountered Rapp’s accusations. He explained, “I learned about Kevin’s stories through news articles while I was working in London. Upon hearing this, I broke down and couldn’t stop crying. It finally hit me the devastating impact that had taken place, and how I had previously disregarded or shielded myself from it.
“That was a really, yeah, really incredible wake-up call, I suppose,” he told THR.

2017 saw Spacey’s response to Rapp’s allegations: “To be completely honest, I don’t recall the incident, as it happened over three decades ago. However, if my actions matched his description, I wholeheartedly apologize for any inappropriate behavior I may have exhibited while under the influence of alcohol. I deeply regret the impact this might have had on him and the feelings he has carried all these years.” Following this, Spacey revealed that he is gay.
In the following summer, Pearce openly discussed his collaboration with Spacey during an interview on an Australian talk show in July 2018.
At this point, it’s quite challenging to discuss,” Pearce confided in host Andrew Denton. “He’s an exceptional talent, truly remarkable. There’s been some difficulty with Kevin, I must say. He can be rather forward.
He told CNN a few days later that he wanted to clarify what he’d said to Denton.
Pearce acknowledged that the topic is delicate and should not be dismissed lightly. While he himself has not experienced sexual assault or molestation, he felt uneasy in a particular situation. He dealt with the issue as soon as it occurred, but regrets bringing it up publicly at this time.
