Kevin Feige warned Hugh Jackman not to return as Wolverine: "Don't come back"

As a long-time fan of Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, I couldn’t contain my excitement when the news broke that they would be teaming up for Deadpool 3. The prospect of Jackman returning to the MCU as the iconic X-Men character, especially in his comic-accurate suit, was a dream come true.

It’s hard to believe that it wasn’t too long ago when Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman surprised us all by announcing they would team up for Deadpool 3. The news was packed with exciting developments; Deadpool 3 was on the way, Wade Wilson was joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-stars were finally getting an adventure that reflected their dynamic partnership.

The highlight of it all for many was Jackman’s comeback as Wolverine. His portrayal of Logan is considered a classic in the superhero genre, and seeing him back again, this time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was a thrilling prospect. Not only did it mean fans could enjoy his iconic performance once more, but it also meant Jackman would don the accurate comic-book suit for the very first time.

Everyone benefited greatly from the situation, including Marvel Studios, but it’s interesting to note that Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, had advised Hugh Jackman against returning for “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” prior to this. (Or, An advantageous outcome ensued for all parties involved, most notably Marvel Studios. However, it is now known that Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, had discouraged Hugh Jackman from reprising his roles in “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” beforehand.)

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Feige shared his perspective that it wouldn’t be appropriate for the actor to reprise the role of Wolverine after delivering “the best ending ever” in “Logan,” which was released in 2017.

I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back. You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo.’

From a gamer’s perspective, it’s tough to dispute the praise Logan received. This game took mature storytelling and gave an emotional send-off to Wolverine, based on the Old Man Logan comic arc. As I played, I found myself taking on the role of an aging Wolverine, protecting a young mutant named X-23. The climax had me sacrificing my character to keep her safe while facing off against a ruthless, emotionless version of myself. It was a sad yet faithful conclusion to Wolverine’s journey that stayed true to both the game and the source material.

I can really relate to the challenge of finding a satisfying ending for a character I’ve played for nearly two decades. But Hugh Jackman pulled it off brilliantly. He first brought the character to life in “X-Men” back in 2000, and over the next 17 years, we saw him in seven more films leading up to “Logan.” As an ardent fan, I could sense that he felt it was time to move on from this role. And boy, did he find a fitting conclusion!

Considering this, it’s understandable why Feige might hold reservations. The allure of a Deadpool and Wolverine film is undeniable, but following such a satisfying conclusion could be risky business. However, there are compelling justifications for taking the plunge. Foremost among these reasons is the long-awaited opportunity for devoted fans to witness their favorite character adorned in the iconic yellow-and-blue Wolverine outfit – an essential element of the comic book lore that has yet to be fully realized on screen by Marvel Studios. If and when they eventually introduce a more faithful adaptation of Wolverine, it would seem incongruous not to have showcased the definitive version wearing the suit beforehand.

Additionally, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have put in great effort to stay true to their respective characters in the upcoming film, which should give fans peace of mind. Reynolds has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with how his character was portrayed in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” leading him to be highly engaged in creating an enjoyable experience for Deadpool fans with the third installment. They are undeniably taking a similar approach.

It’s comforting to know that the Wolverine portrayed by Jackman in this new project isn’t the same one who retired in “Logan” (2017). In that film, the X-Men version of the character passed away and won’t be revived. Instead, Jackman will embody a different iteration from an alternate universe. The allure of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga lies in this very possibility.

Feige’s apprehensions about changing the ending of “Logan” are reasonable, considering how fitting it was for the character. However, it seems that Jackman’s comeback as Wolverine was a gamble worth making. The claws are out once again (and truer to the comics than ever!), and we’re excitedly looking forward to watching him in action.

Deadpool and Wolverine arrives in theaters on Friday, July 26.
