Kevin Costner’s Western flop becomes a Netflix hit
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve found myself captivated by Kevin Costner’s Western series, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” which has been garnering quite the buzz on Netflix after falling short at the box office. It’s a testament to the power of streaming platforms in today’s media landscape!
This initial installment of a planned four-part series, titled an epic Western, unfolds the stories of diverse characters residing in Midwestern America during the tumultuous period of the Civil War. Notably, the ensemble cast boasts Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, and Danny Huston.
After debuting in June, the movie, which was simultaneously filmed with the sequel, unfortunately flopped at the box office, earning just $38.2 million compared to its estimated production cost of $50 million.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that I was initially disappointed when the movie underperformed during its initial theater run. However, it has since discovered a second chance on Netflix, climbing up the global top 10 rankings for an entire week! Remarkably, this surge in popularity is happening despite the fact that it’s only accessible to US subscribers at the moment.
I’m thrilled to share that our movie has managed to secure the seventh position, which is still quite impressive! However, it’s trailing behind some popular titles. “Carry-On” is leading the pack with a whopping 17.4 million streams, while “The Six Triple Eight” is close behind with a staggering 10.8 million views. It’s an honor to be in such esteemed company!
Redoing well on the streaming platform might offer the series another chance to thrive, as its previous lackluster performance led to the cancellation of the second installment, which was scheduled for release in August but got postponed only a month prior.
A representative from Kevin Costner’s production company, Territory Pictures, expressed delight over the audience’s positive reaction to “Horizon” and their eagerness for the continuation of our tale in “Horizon 2”. They explained that Kevin made this film for cinephiles seeking an adventure, and witnessing their enjoyment is truly rewarding.
We are grateful for the backing we’ve gotten from movie enthusiasts and theater managers during the initial release of our saga. Their enthusiasm not only strengthens our faith in their appreciation for our work but also encourages us to continue making films. We appreciate their decision to join us on this exciting journey.
We’re excited about the prospect of broadening that scope, as we believe it will significantly improve the viewing pleasure of Horizon 2.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is streaming on Netflix in the US.
