After finishing his work on Yellowstone and the recently released Horizon: An American Saga, Kevin Costner is now starring in a new Western series on Prime Video. Unfortunately, the series didn’t receive strong reviews after it premiered on February 26th.
Okay, so Kevin Costner isn’t in “The Gray House,” which is a bit of a surprise, but he’s still involved as an executive producer, along with Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary. Sadly, the film didn’t exactly wow the critics – it landed with a pretty lukewarm 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes after its first day of release.
The current rating is based on just six reviews, so it might change as more people share their thoughts. As of right now, there isn’t an overall audience score available.
What Is The Gray House About?
Inspired by real events, this story explores the experiences of women who helped the Union win the Civil War. Although much of the plot is fictionalized for dramatic effect, it incorporates some true historical details.
I just learned about this incredible new movie! It tells the story of four brave women who were actually spies during the war. What’s so fascinating is they cleverly used the Underground Railroad – you know, the network that helped enslaved people escape – and turned it into a secret operation to help win the war. It’s amazing to think about the risks they took with their lives and freedom!
The cast of The Gray House includes Mary-Louise Parker as Eliza Van Lew, a historical figure who ran and recruited members for the spy network. Also starring are Ben Vereen, Robert Knepper, Sam Trammell, Christopher McDonald, Rob Morrow, and Ian Duff. Completing the ensemble are Catherine Hannay, John Ojeyemi, Geoff Mac, Thom Beers, Joshua McGuire, Laura Morgan, and Catherine Garton.
What Are Critics Saying About The Gray House?
Kyle Mullin of Under the Radar found the show disappointingly slow-paced, comparing it to a dull butter knife, even with the inclusion of sword fights. He felt that the show’s attempt to present a pivotal moment in history lacked impact, specifically in The Gray House.
According to Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter, the show is either a boring, badly made, and poorly acted retelling of facts that are hard to confirm, or it feels like a random, unintentionally funny episode of Drunk History.
Collider’s Maggie Lovitt gave the show a positive review, calling it a raw and unflinching look at the lives of overlooked historical figures. She particularly praised its honesty in portraying both the positive and negative aspects of the past, noting that while the show sometimes focuses intensely on the violence experienced by women and Black characters—which she described as ‘trauma porn’—these difficult scenes serve as a stark reminder of the realities of life outside of battle.
Richard Roeper at RogerEbert.com also praised the series, stating that it successfully honors the women and those who supported them who were crucial in defending the United States against those who fought against it.
All eight episodes of The Gray House are streaming on Prime Video.
