Kevin Costner’s surprising career U-turn after Yellowstone bitter exit and $100M Horizon flop

After parting ways with the successful television series Yellowstone after five seasons and experiencing a commercial disappointment with the movie Horizon, Kevin Costner has taken an unexpected turn in his professional journey.

Monday saw Amazon MGM Studios unveiling the news that the twice-Oscar awarded individual, aged 70, has joined the cast for their forthcoming dramedy, “Honeymoon with Harry,” which also features Jake Gyllenhaal.

This version retains the original’s structure while making it more conversational and using common terms.

The movie revolves around a man, played by Gyllenhaal, who tragically loses his fiancée right before their wedding. Overwhelmed by her unexpected demise, he decides to take the pre-planned honeymoon trip with his future father-in-law, portrayed by Costner.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will be taking charge of the film adaptation, derived from Bart Baker’s 2016 novel titled “Honeymoon with Harry.

This marks Costner’s first project since Horizon’s lackluster box office performance.

Following a challenging debut weekend on June 28, 2024, the man with seven children expressed his satisfaction, stating he was genuinely pleased that Horizon seemed visually appealing on the movie screen as intended.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, he expressed that the discussed process is particularly significant for him. He admitted that a highly successful outcome would be delightful, pleasing his ego as well as everyone else’s. However, what truly makes him happiest is that the movie they were discussing appears exactly as he envisioned it to look.

In June, the Yellowstone alum announced that he has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

He informed People that he doesn’t entertain thoughts of retiring since he’s excited to pursue whatever piques his curiosity next.

Costner further explained that his own imagination ‘is what determines what I do, not a boss.’

In a more conversational style, this sentence could be rephrased as: “Dances with Wolves said, ‘I’ve always considered myself quite fortunate throughout my life. While I believe I’ve earned most of it through hard work, not everyone has the same opportunities or path.’

The actor expressed that he doesn’t have specific goals or aspirations left for his career (yet).

The actor mentioned that his career bucket list is currently empty.

I do possess the list, however, I don’t call it by that name. Yet, my gaze and my excitement span far and wide.

Costner mentioned that he’s cherished living, contemplating on possibilities of actions, identities, and influences – not just for himself, but for others as well. What truly fulfills him is the quest for these discoveries.

‘I go through that whole idea, and you realize it’s about time. It’s a rush to get to all of them.’

In simpler terms, it can be said that the actor has discussed his future career path before, such as during an interview with AARP back in 2019.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can certainly relate to the question about retirement. For me, it’s not about looking back and thinking of retiring, but rather, I find myself eagerly anticipating the exciting surprises that lie ahead. The journey continues!

During the latter part of my professional journey, I find myself immersed quite deeply in writing, and there remain several endeavors I am eager to undertake.

He also emphasized that his life extends far beyond the movies; he merely appears in them occasionally. The rest of the time, he leads a separate life.

As a die-hard enthusiast, let me reminisce about my idol’s first steps into stardom. Back in 1981, Kevin Costner graced the silver screen for the very first time, embodying a character in the movie affectionately known as Sizzle Beach, U.S.A., or Malibu Hot Summer – a title that still sends shivers of excitement down my spine!

He went on to make appearances in other films such as Fandango (1985) and The Untouchables (1987).

In the crime film that earned four Oscar nominations, Kevin collaborated with notable actors like Robert De Niro, Andy Garcia, and Sean Connery.

In the year 1990, Kevin Costner not only took on the lead role but also helmed the production of the epic Western film “Dances with Wolves”. This movie went on to earn him the prestigious awards for Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards the following year.

Some other well-known films that feature this actor are Field of Dreams (released in 1989), The Bodyguard (from 1992), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), Wyatt Earp (which came out in 1994), Open Range (2003), and Man of Steel (2013).

For several years, Kevin’s been a familiar face on the silver screen, but he’s also ventured into television productions, including the 2012 miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, for which he received an Emmy award.

In the TV series Yellowstone, created by Taylor Sheridan, he delivered a notable performance as the rancher character, John Dutton.

In the year 2024, Kevin Costner took on multiple roles as both actor, writer, and director for the film titled “Horizon: An American Saga.” This production is slated to have a total of four parts, with an additional three films planned following it.

The second segment had its debut earlier this year, specifically at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February. Additionally, it was showcased during the 81st Venice Film Festival last September.

The second chapter was initially scheduled for theater release last year; however, disappointing box office sales have led to uncertainty about its new release date.
