As a movie buff with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of ambitious film projects that didn’t quite live up to the hype or faced unexpected setbacks. The news of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2” being pulled from its planned release date leaves me with a bittersweet feeling.
As a movie reviewer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the August 16 release of “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2” starring Kevin Costner. However, I was taken aback when I recently learned that the production team has decided to postpone the premiere. Despite the grandiose expectations and the significant hype surrounding this ambitious project in Hollywood, it seems we’ll have to wait a little longer to witness the continuation of this American saga.
The film “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” which Costner intended to release on June 28, was expected to be followed by two more chapters. In its first two weeks of release, this expensive production, costing an estimated $100 million and running for 3 hours and 1 minute, only earned $24.5 million. Costner, who took on multiple roles in the film as director, co-writer, producer, and lead actor, reportedly invested around $38 million of his own funds into the project.
New Line Cinema and Territory Pictures have chosen not to debut “Horizon: Chapter 2” on August 16, allowing more time for audiences to explore the initial chapter of “Horizon.” This includes watching it on Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) and Max in the coming weeks. We’re grateful for our exhibition partners’ understanding as American viewers get to know this film during its theatrical release.
Starting on July 16, the initial release of “Horizon” will be available for rent or purchase on top-tier video-on-demand platforms. Simultaneously, it will still be shown in cinemas. The exact rollout date on Max streaming service is yet to be disclosed.
In a separate announcement from Territory Pictures, they expressed their delight in the positive reception of “Horizon” and the eagerness of audiences to see more in “Horizon 2.” Kevin created this film for movie lovers seeking an engaging journey. The appreciation from cinemagoers and theater owners as they explore the initial tale strengthens our conviction in our audience and our cinematic creations. We’re grateful for their support and are excited for the chance to expand the release window, believing it will only heighten the enjoyment of witnessing “Horizon 2.”

The Hollywood Reporter was the initial source that broke the news about the new release date for “Chapter 2.”
The “Horizon” series unfolds against the backdrop of the American West during the Civil War era. In the initial installment, multiple storylines and an ensemble of characters are introduced. This diverse cast, headed by Costner, also includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Tatanka Means, Ella Hunt, and Danny Huston.
In Chapter 1, we are left with a sneak peek of what’s to come in Chapter 2, suggesting that the foundations laid in the first film will eventually bear fruit. However, it remains to be seen when or if this will unfold, keeping audiences in suspense for now.
