Kevin Costner’s First Movie Since Horizon Sets Filming Start Date After Western Saga Stalls

Kevin Costner is about to get back in front of the camera.

The first movie in Kevin Costner’s ambitious Horizon: An American Saga, released in 2024, was a deeply personal project for him – he wrote, produced, directed, and starred in it. However, the Western film didn’t do well in theaters, and the future of the planned three sequels is now uncertain.

Kevin Costner is reportedly taking on a new role in a dramedy called Honeymoon with Harry, according to Deadline. Filming is scheduled to begin in April in Queensland, Australia, including locations in Brisbane and the Whitsunday Islands.

It stars Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal, and I was happy to see Sarah Pidgeon – you might remember her from I Know What You Did Last Summer – is involved too. It’s based on a book called Honeymoon with Harry by Bart Baker. There’s no news on when it’ll hit cinemas yet, but if filming stays on track, we might get to see it towards the end of next year.

After the sweeping western Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, Kevin Costner takes on a very different role in Honeymoon with Harry. The film centers on a man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who, following a heartbreaking event just before his wedding, embarks on a road trip with his future father-in-law (Costner). Though they start off clashing, the two gradually develop a close, emotional connection during their journey.

Queensland Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek announced the start of filming and emphasized the positive economic impact it will have on the local community.

Filming Honeymoon with Harry is expected to boost the state’s economy by around $51 million and create 215 jobs. It will also put our state on the map as a great place to visit for viewers worldwide.

Kevin Costner’s new film, Honeymoon with Harry, is being released as he continues to work on his ambitious Horizon saga. The second chapter of Horizon: An American Saga was finished and premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2024. Although initially planned for a theatrical release in August 2024, just months after the first chapter, the film’s release was delayed due to the disappointing response to Chapter 1.

Filming for the third chapter has begun, but production has paused because of funding issues. No work has started on the fourth chapter, and it’s becoming less and less likely that Kevin Costner will be able to finish his planned movie series as he initially intended.

Films like Honeymoon with Harry might offer a clue to what’s happening with Kevin Costner’s Horizon. He invested a significant amount of his own money into the film, and it’s likely we’ll see him taking on more acting roles in the future, possibly to help fund and complete this project he’s been working on for a long time.
